A Unique Solution to Improve Sound Quality in a Music Room
by Gerald Hynes Sontext Business ownerSerenity Acoustic Panels Installed as Flush Panel Doors
A Music School in Melbourne, Australia,
needed to improve sound quality in a large music practice room. A very common, and effective solution to this
type of problem is ti install sound absorbing panels such as Sontext Serenity
Acoustic Panels to the walls. However, most of the wall area in this space was
being utilised for other purposes such as white boards, video screens, etc.
Architectural fitout company Jacaranda
Industries, in conjunction with the architect, decided to use the acoustic
panels as the cupboard door panels. Serenity Acoustic panels were chosen because
of their rigidity, impact resistance, sound absorption and the fact that they
could be custom made to suit the door dimensions.
To create an environment where all musical
instruments could be enhanced, from drums to guitars, the back of the panels
were perforated to utilise the airspace volume in the cupboards as an extra
‘trap’ for low frequency sound waves that pass right through the panels. In
most applications like this, 50mm or 75mm thick panels would be required to
absorb low frequency sound. Utilising the airspace meant that the thinner panel
25mm could be used. (see pictures above).
Serenity 25mm Wall Panels were manufactured
with a rigid perforated backing and fixed to the steel frame of the doors, and the
face covered with a breathable textile fabric.
The fact that the acoustic panels could be
custom made was important to suit a unique situation. Jacaranda Industries had
manufactured the steel door frames and sent the measurements to Sontext
enabling Sontext to custom manufacture the grooved acoustic panels.
Serenity acoustic fabric acoustic panels are
manufactured in standard thicknesses of 25mm, 50mm, 75mm and 100mm. However,
Sontext acoustic panels can be custom made to suit almost any application.
This project demonstrates that it is may not
always be possible to install off-the-shelf standard acoustic panels. That is
why it is important to choose an Acoustic Panel manufacturer, like Sontext,
that has the flexibility to custom manufacture to fit panels around fittings,
lighting, windows, etc. Sontext manufacture their acoustic wall panels in their
Australian factory to suit all their customers needs and applications.
