On a quiet morning in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Todd Troxel is already in the gym. The court is empty except for the sound of bouncing basketballs and the sharp squeak of sneakers on hardwood. For Troxel, these early hours aren’t optional—they’re where champions are made.

From NBA training rooms to Euroleague finals and now the sidelines at Oklahoma State University, Troxel has built a career on a single truth: excellence is earned in the moments no one sees.

Beginnings in the NBA Trenches

Troxel’s path to the top tiers of basketball started in the demanding world of NBA player development. For over a decade, he designed and delivered training programs for some of the league’s most promising athletes. Joel Przybilla, a defensive specialist drafted ninth overall, benefited from Troxel’s precision footwork drills and relentless defensive conditioning. OJ Mayo, a third overall pick known for his scoring, refined his shooting mechanics and game stamina under Troxel’s watch.

In those years, Troxel learned more than just the biomechanics of a jump shot or the timing of a defensive rotation. He studied the psychology of high-performance athletes—how to push them when fatigue set in, how to rebuild confidence after a bad game, and how to demand more without losing trust.

A Pivotal Move to Women’s Basketball

It was a chance opportunity in Russia that would redefine Troxel’s career. Joining the powerhouse UMMC Ekaterinburg women’s team, he was introduced to Diana Taurasi, already a dominant force in the sport.

“After about a week, Diana and I got in the gym,” Troxel recalls. “From that day on, we trained every single day.”

Their sessions were intense, combining NBA-style strength and conditioning with targeted skill work. But the partnership went far beyond mechanics. Troxel became a strategist and confidant, breaking down opponents, identifying weak spots, and offering in-game adjustments to give Taurasi the edge.

The bond they formed was built on absolute trust. “She could always count on me, and I could always count on her,” Troxel says. “Once we were family, I gave everything to be what she needed in a coach. In return, I got a sister for life.”

Championships and Global Impact

Troxel’s time with UMMC yielded Euroleague championships in 2013 and 2016, along with multiple finals appearances. The success was not just about talent—it was about creating a culture of relentless preparation and adaptability.

That adaptability would serve him well in China, where he joined the Shanghai Sharks organization. There, Troxel led the junior team to two consecutive championships and guided the senior squad into the CBA playoffs, proving his ability to succeed in entirely different basketball systems.

The Philosophy Behind the Success

Troxel’s coaching principles are simple yet powerful:

  1. Never stop learning – Constantly study the game, from NBA innovations to emerging international trends.

  2. Never get outworked – Lead by example in effort and intensity.

  3. Tell the truth – Provide honest feedback, even when it’s hard to hear.

“Top athletes don’t want a yes man,” Troxel explains. “They want the truth. They want someone who’s going to push them beyond what they think they can do.”

Bringing Pro Standards to the NCAA

Troxel challenges his players to think and train like professionals. Film study, opponent analysis, and mental preparation are as much a part of practice as shooting drills or conditioning. “Some people say they work hard,” he tells them, “but you don’t know what that really is until you see it and do it.”

Beyond Basketball: Building People, Not Just Players

For Troxel, wins and titles are important, but they aren’t the whole story. He measures success in the growth of the individuals he coaches—how they carry themselves, how they face challenges, and how they apply the lessons of basketball to life.

His players know that his honesty isn’t criticism for its own sake; it’s a form of investment. “If I’m pushing you, it’s because I see more in you,” he often tells them.

A Life Anchored in Family

Despite the global nature of his career, Troxel remains grounded in family. He’s a devoted husband and father, and his travels have only deepened his appreciation for home. Now raising a young daughter, he’s determined to pass on the values of hard work, accountability, and resilience that have guided him throughout his career.

The Road Ahead

Troxel’s journey has been defined by movement—across leagues, countries, and levels of play—but the mission has never changed: make each player better every day. Whether it’s mentoring an NCAA freshman or consulting with a professional team overseas, he approaches each challenge with the same intensity he brought to his earliest days in the NBA.

From the quiet hours in the gym to the bright lights of championship games, Todd Troxel’s story proves that greatness is built through consistency, trust, and a relentless commitment to improvement. And as he continues to coach the next generation, his legacy is already clear: he’s the coach who turns potential into greatness.
