5 Famous Historical Places to Visit in Delhi

Delhi, India’s capital is situated on the banks of the famous Yamuna River and is a vibrant city to explore. With several places of historic importance, this city also has a variety of mouth-watering dishes that you should try. India Gate:
This popular attraction of Delhi was built to give ode to the Indian soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War. This memorial was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and is about 138 feet in height. Surrounded by lush green gardens, the India gate is also a famous picnic spot with many options for street food. In the evening, this memorial is lit up with different colored spotlights making it look even more magnificent. It is located at a very convenient location making it easily accessible from one of the hotels in Delhi near railway station as well.  

Red Fort:
This historical fort attracts tourists from around the globe and is also listed as one of the World Heritage sites. The architecture of this fort shows a perfect representation of the Mughal culture that was brought by the Mughals in India. The architecture has a blend of Timurid, Persian and Hindu traditions. From 6 pm onwards visitors can also see the special lights and sound show which take place in both English and Hindi. The two rooms that you shouldn’t miss out visiting are Diwan-i-Aam, the hall of a public audience, and the Diwan-i-Khas, the hall of private audience.

Humayun’s Tomb:
This tomb is also one listed under the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and reflects the Mughal and Persian culture through its architecture. This tomb was the last refuge of the Mughal Emperor Humayun and is a luxurious palace rather than just being a tomb. It is surrounded by a beautiful garden and is the first tomb to have a garden in the Indian sub-continent. Built by the last widow of Humayun, there are many graves of other Mughal rulers here. Gurudwara Bangla Sahib:
Located in Connaught place in Delhi, the Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is a magnificent white marble Sikh temple. It is an important place of worship with golden onion domes and has a natural and peaceful environment. This temple was constructed at the site where Harkrishan Dev, the eighth Sikh guru stayed before his death in 1664. There is also a small museum here and free meals are served to pilgrims like all the other Gurudwaras. Visit this Gurudwara when you’re staying at one of the New Delhi hotels for a peaceful evening.

Qutub Minar:
Qutub Minar, also listed under the UNESCO World Heritage Site is the tallest individual tower in the world. Even though it has been destroyed by natural apocalypses many times, this soaring tower continues to attract many tourists every year. The immaculate carvings add to the magnificent architecture of this monument and reminder of the rich history that India had. With Minar in the backdrop, many Delhiites come here for picnics and to relax.

Akshardham Temple Delhi:
This famous Hindu temple has its name in the Guinness Book of World Records as the World's Largest Comprehensive Hindu Temple. It reflects the Indian culture and spirituality and the architecture itself complements the Hindu culture. This temple dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan is also known as Swaminarayan Akshardham.

The temple walls display eternal Hindu teachings and devotional traditions with eight flamboyantly carved Mandapams. Lord Swaminarayan's statue is the centerpiece and is surrounded by 20,000 deities which are important personalities in the Indian history, all of which showcase the traditions, architecture and timeless spirituality of the Indian culture. It also has an open garden and the Akshardham complex has India’s largest stepwell.
