You won't learn how to become a celebrity from a class at school, although the cheer leading squad or the Varsity might lead you to fame. Even though some of the steps up the star status ladder are understood, there is still that mysterious Factor X that gets some to icon level and leaves most in obscurity.

In the 'first' category, we have Charles Lindberg, who first flew alone over the Atlantic Ocean. He was young, daring, handsome, and successful. Amelia Earhart also became famous for attempting an historic flight. However, her fame was probably secured because she was not successful, but disappeared mysteriously en route.

In the 'best' arena, you can take your pick of everything from food to sports. To be truly memorable, however, the mysterious force of popularity must be factored in. Most people will not remember who was best in show at Westminster last year, although that pooch was a celebrity at the time. But everyone remembers Seabiscuit, Elizabeth Taylor, and Rin Tin Tin.

'Worst' can get you in the household name category, too. Charles Manson, worst murder. He was so creepy, with his groupies and weirdly handsome persona, that he is still known after decades in prison. Worst memory - Goldie Hawn on, was it Laugh In?, when she would pop out to say a one liner and blow it every time.

'Most Outrageous' can happen in show biz, politics, the business world, or in just everyday life. Liz Taylor's many marriages, Peewee Herman's sense of humor, President Johnson picking his dog up by the ears, the woman who had so many kids she put one in the trunk of her car and let her out at rest stops. The old lady looking for the beef, Twiggy taking the skinny model look to fashionable extremes, the gecko who sells car insurance - who could have predicted what would catch the public's eye and ear?

Sometimes talent gets recognized for the wonderful thing it is, like Elvis. Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, and Kathryn Hepburn will probably never be forgotten. Seabiscuit, Lassie, Miss Piggy, and the cat in the hat may endure forever. The best of the best somehow never goes out of style.

You can be so bad you are good press, as well. Charles Manson is still a prominent figure although he has been locked up for decades. Henry VIII is another example of bad behavior getting immortalized, as is Bluebeard and Jack the Ripper. No one ever said celebrity was all good.

Stars can be made, as in the old days of Hollywood publicists and the tabloids today. Most fame is here today and gone tomorrow. But sometimes it is as inevitable as the rising of the moon. Michael J. Fox couldn't play a bit part, because no one was watching the star of the show. Farrah Fawcett didn't do anything but smile through all that hair and we were hooked. Fonzie kind of just walked through the door and the audience went wild. Secretariat was so incredible I even remember his jockey's name.

Today You Tubes may be the best way to become a star. So far it has worked for people from age two up. You used to have to struggle to be 'discovered', but now you can blog your way to the top, star in your own home movie, or shine on Facebook. Not as glamorous, perhaps, but it's a lot of fun.

Celebrities can also be local, of course. Save a life, rescue a cat from a tree, give a kid a break, feed the homeless, catch a huge fish. Live to be 100. Win the lottery big time. Give it all away. There are many ways to be a celebrity, whether it is in your own home town or on the world stage.

How to become a celebrity? Get noticed, that's all it takes. When two or more are gathered together and talking about you, you've made it!
