Photography is only as good as the photographer taking the shot. Or is he? It is not really for me or you to decide. It is up to the viewer to decide if the photographer's work moved them or not. That being said, the difference between a good photographer and a great one is his or her ability to move the masses. These great photographers are always in the right place when they need to be awaiting the perfect shot.

When my children were small, my wife and I had a large picture taken of our two children. We hung it over the fireplace and enjoyed it for many years. When I see the picture of them as just wee babies now that are growing up like weeds, it makes me happy. That said, photography can stir the soul.

Although photography has come a long way since the flash bulb, it is still an art form. The cameras are smaller, lighter, faster and smarter. The larger digital cameras do just about everything except wash the dishes. Ironically, it sill boils down to the skill of the photographer to get the right shot at the right time.

What does it take to catch the perfect shot? Lighting, positioning, a crazy angle and maybe even a rabbit's foot are all ingredients to get it right. Sometimes, it might be the littlest detail that matters most like a single tear on the face of a child. A picture of the woods just before dark has a much different meaning than seeing the same picture just after the sun comes up.

My favorite photographer of all times is Ansel Adams. He was born in 1902 and died in 1984. Ansel is best known for his black and white photographs of which many were taken in the Yosemite National Park. Furthering photography as an art form, he and a man named Fred Archer developed the Zone System which deals with exposure and contrast. Recently, someone discovered some lost negatives from Ansel's earlier years and paid $45.00 for them at a yard sale. Turns out, they are worth about 200 million dollars.

National Geographic magazine, of which I just renewed my subscription, is famous for its photos. As a young child myself, I was able to take a trip around the world by flipping through the magazine. I am still astonished at the experience.

"Reminisce" is a magazine which collect pictures from days gone by. My grandparents subscribe to the magazine. Most of the pictures are from the 30's, 40's, 50's etc. People send in the pictures with the back ground story and the publisher publishes the articles. The magazines' tag line is "The Magazine That Brings Back the Good Times." I would say it was the pictures that bring back the good times. The magazine definitely takes my grandparents back a few days.

If you are considering a career in photography, learn what it takes to be great technically. But, don't discount the art. There are plenty of people out there who know there way around a digital camera but lack passion and the ability to move other through their work.
