What would our lives be like without our favorite tunes? How boring would it be just to watch TV and not hear your favorite theme song? We hear music in so many places and situations it's easy to just ignore it, but what if it wasn't there? When you turn on the radio, your favorite song may spill out. But, if it doesn't, just surf your channels and you will find something to match your mood.

For me, Country Music has been my comfort music in times of need. Some people gravitate toward Rhythm and Blues or mainstream Pop music. Country Music just has that mood matching knack that other types of music just can not match. Breakups, friends, divorce, missing a loved one and doing life all show up in good country music.

If you are a music lover and have never taken a college course called Music Appreciation, you are missing out. I reluctantly took the course years ago. Although the classical music we studied was different from what I was used to, I noticed a music road map from yesteryear to today. The music moved me in a way I had not yet experienced, and I still like a good classical from Bach every now and again.

In addition to Country Music, I am a big fan of the Top 40, currently with Ryan Seacrest. On the Top 40, you will find upbeat pop music. VH1 and MTV normally play Top 40 hits. In the Atlanta area, there are several really great Top 40 driven radio stations. There are always several hits in the mix that I enjoy finding on the radio on my way to work.

American Idol has definitely changed the music industry. There are thousands of people who try out every season with only a handful making it through. But think about this. What if Carrie Underwood had never tried out? What if Daughtry had a bad performance on the first round and never even made into the competition. Another thought is that there must be thousands more super talented artists out there who will never be noticed. For this reason, I am a hug American Idol Fan. American Idol is making dreams come true and giving the rest of us some really great music to listen to.

Now, I am not a huge fan of Rap Music. But, I do have an appreciation for what they do. One of my favorite artists is Eminem. His pain, passion, and life experiences flow from his lyrics. The beat of the music and his style is like no other. Eminem is unique and original and I have an appreciation for that.

I would encourage anyone to try different genres of music. If you're feeling down and normally turn to a favorite country song, why not try out the blues if you haven't listened in a while. It might be just what the doctor ordered.

I am not a music teacher but I appreciate music in my life. I hope you do too. One last thought here. How would your church service be without your favorite hymn? Your church experience would be lacking to say the least. There is a song for just about everyone and I appreciate that.
