13 Common causes of irregular periods in women

by Hitesh Joshi Digital Marketer
1)  Thyroid disease
If your period becomes more frequent and lighter, it can be a sign of hypothyroidism. Less common and heavier is a symptom of hyperthyroidism.
Thyroid disease is more common in women, and is usually diagnosed between 20 or 30 years, so the development of an irregular periods cycle during this time of life can be a sign that you may have a problem with thyroid.

 2) Stress
Stress can cause something called anovulation, when your body does not release an egg every month as it is supposed to.

3)  Travelling abroad
Crossover time zones can reject your hormones in the same way as stress.
Some women are more likely than others. Irregularities can also occur if you travel somewhere with such a significant time difference that you accidentally take two contraceptive pills in a day or skip a day.

4)  Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Sporadic and unpredictable periods are a hallmark of PCOS, a hormonal imbalance that interferes with the body’s ability to ovulate normally.
If you start to completely skip periods, this could be a sign of PCOS or even another hormonal imbalance.

 5)  Early menopause or premature ovarian failure
After a few months of your coming up period earlier each time, you can end up skipping a month. Generally, this happens to women in their forties as peri-menopause begins, but when it happens in your 20s or 30s, this can be a sign that your ovaries are declining earlier than usual.

6)  Uterine fibroids and polyps
These growths in the uterus are typically benign, but they can cause a very heavy and painful period.
They can also cause stains. While all women of childbearing age are likely to develop, they are more common in overweight women.

7)  Pelvic Inflammation (PID)
PID is an infection of the reproductive organs, and is usually caused by STIs such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, which can travel in the body when they are not detected and untreated.

8)  Endometriosis
Women with endometriosis tend to have very heavy periods. Some may also have very painful periods, while others may not feel pain at all.
Since the condition usually develops a few years after the first period of a girl, those who suffer from it may just think that their period is normal.

9)  Win or lose a lot of weight
Significant changes in weight can impact your pituitary gland, creating hormonal imbalance and disrupting your body’s ability to ovulate. Returning to a healthy weight, however, can solve this problem (there is no deeper underlying cause).

10) Extreme exercise
An intense exercise regimen may cause sports amenorrhea or an abnormal absence of menstruation.
Research suggests that the stress and energy required by intense exercise on the body can have an impact on hormones and unbalance them.

11)  Contraceptive pills
Contraceptive pills use a combination of estrogen and progestin (some pills are only progestins) to prevent ovulation.

12)  Other medicines
Anticoagulants (anticoagulants) such as heparin or warfarin may make your period heavier.
Some antipsychotics, antidepressants and methadone may also cause irregular menses. If a new medication appears to be disrupting your cycle, talk to your prescriber.

13)  Bad diet
