What Are You Doing To Brand Yourself?

The most important thing you need to do to succeed is BRAND YOURSELF.
You will hear this advice over & over again.  So, what are you
doing to Brand Yourself?  I think it is important for me to point out a
little bit about branding.  Once someone gets a first impression of
you, it is hard to change that impression.  Be sure to put yourself out
there in a way you want to be remembered.

Recently I was developing a new campaign.  I wanted to be sure to STAND OUT and be remembered while, at the same time, building my marketing credibility.  I had been speaking with a well know marketer Jerry Iannucci
via email.  I finished my capture page and sent it to Jerry for him to
take a look.  I wanted to make sure I didn't look too silly. This
campaign includes my usual picture, only this time with a crown on my
head.  Just a little tweak but enough to draw some attention.  I was a
little surprised by Jerry's response.  My question was, Is it too silly? His response was, Maybe not silly enough.
While I thought I was putting myself out there in a way to be
remembered, Jerry's response reminded me there are thousands of people
marketing trying to do the same thing. You will need to take a STAND OUT Approach to get the job done.

I want to give you one example of a guy who is doing a fabulous job of Branding.  His name is Robert Blakely.
He makes all of his advertising fun.  Robert uses different techniques
and styles but the one thing about Robert's ads, they are ALWAYS fun.
Whether it is him kicking Spongebob or him in a top hat & coat, his
ads are ones I always remember.  And that, folks, is what it is all about.

So, What are you doing to Brand Yourself?  I hope it is outlandish, extravagant, improbable, and exciting.  Good Luck & Let's All Stand Out in 2011!

I always use the same picture - yeah the one one the left here. I figure it breeds familiarity. I also use the tag line: "Creating Success One Step at a Time" - Maybe I should rethink that and start using a variety of pictures and some variations of the tag line: say something like:
Create Success with Corey?

Thoughts anyone

There is more than one way to brand yourself and acting silly is just one. I think being helpful is another less graphic method, but just as effective. If you can get a reputation (another word for branding) for your willingness to serve, I would give that more weight than associating you with a kick in Square Pants Sponge Bob's seat. One of the ways I have done this is tutorials on YouTube. I have one that is over three years old and still brings in referrals for a free website it promotes with no effort at all.

I agree that there are many effective ways to brand yourself. Each of us has to figure out what works for us as individuals.

Corey, I always use the same pic also, mostly because that's really what I look like (without my glasses) and I always use my internet name, elceelee. I think you should keep your tag and picture--it's who you are. Oldbuddy, you are right about helping other folks and I always try to do that whenever I can. Cheryl is one of the people I trust for help here at APSense, and I agree that everyone has to approach "branding" with whatever is most comfortable for them.

Variety is the spice of life. I think humor grabs attention which is half the battle online. When I see a guy in a suit & tie, "Yawn", all I see is a guy in a suit & tie. When you capture my attention with humor, I look closer. I am not saying everyone needs to kick Spongebob but everyone needs to do something to GRAB ATTENTION!

@ Catherine ~ Okay - I'll go toss all my suits and ties...LOL
Warren (Oldbuddy) won't like that......

When I do presentations in front of groups, I will typically interject humorous stories associated with the subject as I go about the presentation; it usually relaxes people and tends to get them more involved.

well, at first: good and useful article, all serious marketers should care about this question, second - I'm branding myself with various things mostly with all activities I'm doing....branding is not (for me) just designing the logo/nick/avatar/whatever, branding is much wider....
