All those who were born in 1920's, 30's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

This is so true...................

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1920's, 30's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer.

Then, after all that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking!

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on the weekends, somehow we didn't starve to death!

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy fruit Spangles and some bangers.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it.

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day... And we were OK.

We would spend hours building our billycarts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and cubby houses and played in creeks with matchbox cars.

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time....... Really!

We were given BB guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays,

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Footy had trials and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 70 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them!

CONGRATULATIONS!

Arthur Webster Senior   Just plain honesty
It's true - by today's standards we should all be dead.

Only one thing saved us.

WE WERE ACTIVE!

We had to be in the garden to drink from the garden hose - and we drank from the garden hose because we did not want to waste too much time away from whatever it was we were doing.

Collecting returnable bottles meant long journeys on foot and, hopefully, the carrying of an increasing weight.

We probably played in creeks after a fair old walk to get there.

We fell out of trees because we had climbed them in the first place.

Rode bikes and walked! How revolutionary!

Sports team selections. Who the hell wanted Artur Webster on their team when he could be called away at any time to look after his parents? What about Peter Taylor, one of my few friends at school? He couldn't even run 10 yards, let alone control a ball while doing it! But we didn't care. We were aware of our limitations and were encouraged and taught to play to our strengths - we were on teams that very few sports team members could qualify for.

Building tree houses? Think of the effort THAT took - not only climbing the tree but also carrying up the building material.

To eat worms and mud pies, you had to dig them up first.

Maybe the one aspect of our lives that should be included in this list is the one which I was most excited to hear.

You know the one!

The one where a parent said "For crying out loud - GO OUT AND PLAY!"

You has to wait until 10 for your BB gun?! I got mine at 5 and was a little sharpshooter too. I could hit an old Pabst can at 30 paces! Would have been farther but I was only allowed to pump the gun one time!

Kids today are so lucky - perhaps !!!
I had to walk a mile to school, then when I went to Grammar School, a mile to
the bus stop, then 9 miles to the school, whatever the weather.
Didn't do me any harm :-) Lived in country UK as a child.

It seems that we all agree that we were active in more than just one way.

Here is what was a typical school day when i was in High School. We lived and worked
a dairy farm in country Victoria..

5 am up and outside helping bring the cows up to the milking shed.
6 am breakfast and getting ready for school.
6:30 start the walk into town to catch the train for school. I was the eldest so it was my responsibility to make sure that my 3 younger brothers were at there destinations safely.
7:30 the train ride of some 70 minutes or so was always a great adventure. Some alone
time at the beginning and then the company of friends towards the end.
8:45 a brisk 10 minute walk to School...................................

3 pm head home.
5:30 arrive home and change clothes to help bring the cows up for milking.
6:30 supper which the quicker we finished the more playtime we had, before bed.

We had some fantastic cricket test matches and footy games. Depending on the season.

7:30 Bed, lights out.

Wayne. :-)
