Skills You Can Learn With Or Without Your College Degree?

Asked by Emily Lewis, in Career
A four-year degree isn’t any longer a requirement for several lucrative positions, nor is it an automatic ticket to career success. And with the price of a college education continuing to rise, student loans are becoming more of a burden, as well. But nowhere are the opportunities greater than within the IT field, which is good news because you’ll be able to pursue an online training and certification in much of this space.

Well Brendan, I cannot imagine getting any employment in the medical profession, either Phlebotomist.or Medical Assistant, without a college degree. Al least not here.

Even groundskeepers/landscapers often hold degrees from agricultural colleges, which makes them much more desireable when looking for first employment in the field

There are many skills that can be learned with or without a college degree. For example, anyone can learn how to code or design websites. With the numerous online tutorials and courses available, it is possible to become proficient in web development without ever stepping foot in a college classroom. Additionally, many people learn soft skills such as communication, problem-solving, and leadership through real-world experience rather than formal education. These skills can be developed by working in teams, volunteering for organizations, and engaging with diverse communities. Finally, those interested in pursuing a career in business can benefit from learning financial literacy, which involves understanding basic principles of money management and investing. This knowledge can be acquired through self-study or taking free classes offered by financial institutions.

There are lots of skills you can learn, whether or not you have a college degree, to help you enter a new professional field. Well-known online platforms like Google, Udemy, Coursera, Eduonix, and Emarketinginstitute offer many free certification courses.

In addition to these educational websites, YouTube is also a goldmine of tutorial material. Anyone with a high school diploma can take full advantage of these courses to build a bright future towards financial freedom.

Here are some skills that are in demand:

Digital Marketing: Learn about social media marketing, search engine optimization (SEO), content marketing, and online advertising.

Coding and Programming: Acquire skills in languages like Python, JavaScript, or Ruby. Coding is valuable across various industries.

Data Analysis: Develop skills in data interpretation, visualization, and analysis using tools like Excel, Python, or R.

Graphic Design: Master design software like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or Canva for creating visual content.

Project Management: Learn project management methodologies and tools like Agile, Scrum, or Kanban.

Cybersecurity: With the increasing reliance on technology, cybersecurity skills are in high demand. Learn about ethical hacking, network security, and risk management.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: Gain knowledge in AI and ML technologies, including programming languages like Python and frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch.

Content Creation: Develop skills in writing, video editing, and content creation for platforms like YouTube, blogs, or podcasts.

Language Skills: Being multilingual is a valuable skill, especially in a globalized world.

Sales and Negotiation: Master the art of persuasion, negotiation, and relationship building.

Customer Service: Learn effective communication and problem-solving skills for providing excellent customer service.

Soft Skills: Develop soft skills such as communication, teamwork, adaptability, and emotional intelligence.

Digital Literacy: Stay updated on the latest digital tools and platforms, including cloud services and collaboration tools.

Health and Wellness: Consider learning about nutrition, fitness, mindfulness, or even becoming a certified personal trainer.

Entrepreneurship: Develop skills in business planning, marketing, and financial management if you're interested in starting your own venture.

One thing to consider is that a person should choose a skill or professional sector they are interested in. Career goals are hard decisions to make, and if not managed seriously, it becomes too complicated to achieve a reputable status in the community because everyone values the achievements we make in life, including family.
