What are the different types of welding in the steel industry?
by Dynamix Group WriterCoalescing materials like thermoplastics or metals
so that they join them seamlessly is called welding. In this process, while
joining two materials together, both pressure and heat are applied to them
along with a filler material that creates a weld pool which gradually cools and
forms a very strong joint.
Thanks to the evolution of technology, the welding
process has evolved a lot over the years and it has led to various different
techniques for welding. Before welding, one needs to choose the right process
so that the best results can be achieved with maximum efficiency. Mentioned
below are a few types of welding process that are used by the top steel
manufacturers in India:
Flux Cored Arc Welding
This type of welding is similar to MIG welding. In
Flux Cored Arc Welding a tubular wire is used that is filled with flux. Using
shielding gas in this type of welding process is not mandatory. It depends on
the type of filler that is used. For beginners, this process is apt as it is
simple to learn and very affordable. Flux-cored arc welding is good for
beginners, even though Despite the fact that the results of this welding process
aren’t always aesthetically pleasing, this is quite widely used.
Submerged Arc Welding
Submerged arc welding is quite popular and mainly
used on nickel-based and ferrous steel alloys. This is owing to its minimal
fumes emissions. Also, this process requires minimal preparation and offers
satisfactory results that make it efficient and quick.
TIG Welding
When a non-consumable gas such as argon is used to
produce high quality, strong weld, the process is called Tungsten Inert Gas
welding. In this process, electrical current is run through the tungsten
electrode to produce heat. This technique is perfect for use in all kinds of
applications and commonly used to weld stainless steel, copper, nickel,
aluminum, and magnesium.
Electroslag Welding
To weld non-ferrous thick materials this
single-pass efficient welding process is best suited. Contrary to the other
processes, this is a complex technique that cannot be executed without a lot of
skill. This technique is famous in the aerospace and maritime industries.
Gas Welding
This technique is quite different from other
welding techniques that are used in modern days. Compared to the other
techniques, this is a very old technique and also known as oxyacetylene
welding. However, despite it being old, this technique is used to date in tube
and pipe welding.
The largest
steel producers in India use these welding techniques. They are very
efficient and useful.
