Turning Wood From Tree To Kitchen Cabinet

by Mohit J. White Hat Link Building Services

There are a lot of trees that can be cut down with a saw mill USA and turned into kitchen cabinets, both soft and hardwoods. Common softwood trees used for such purposes include cedars, pines and spruce trees, though pine is the most common and because of its availability also the more affordable. Hardwood trees commonly used include ash, sycamore, oak, beech and birch with oak being more popular because it is strong and durable. When looking at exotic woods or more expensive hardwoods common types are mahogany, elm and cherry.

Where do most manufacturers get their wood from?

Typically most come from managed forests. It is a good idea to have furniture made from ethically sourced materials and from sustainable sources. Oak can be found all around the world though a lot is harvested in Eastern Europe and America. A very popular choice for kitchen cabinets is red and white oak, both of which are grown and cut in North America. Birch, ash and beech are also commonly sourced from managed forests. Pine comes from North America and Scandinavia mostly.

Cutting and processing trees into boards

When you are cutting your own trees and processing them into boards with a chain saw mill USA you can do it on your own time. But commercially this usually takes place in the colder months as the trees have less moisture then. It is easier and cheaper to handle and move trees that are drier. Older trees are preferred as young trees still need to grow. When trees are felled, new saplings are planted to preserve the supply. Either the trees are cut by workers using chainsaws or a large machine is used that grabs them, strips them, and cuts them. They are then either stored there or moved to a sawmill.

There they get processed into boards or planks at a commercial saw mill USA. They are rough sawn first using either the through and through technique or quarter sawing. Then some are more finely sawn, circular edges removed and planed to be ready for use to make kitchen cabinets or anything else.

Length of time it takes for these trees to grow

The harvesting happens at different times depending on the tree type and how quick they are to grow. One of the reasons pine is popular with chain saw mill USA is it just takes 25 to 30 years to reach a time when it can be harvested which is quick for trees. Another softwood tree Sitka spruce also has a faster growth rate so it is good for being used as timber, it being ready at 40 years. In comparison hardwoods grow more slowly which can be part of why they are more expensive to buy as timber. Oaks for example take 70 years, sometimes longer to reach maturity and they still do not yield as much wood as a Sitka spruce.
