Top five global jewellery icons

by Lena Burkut Writer

When it comes to the jewellery market, the world is a host to extreme competition from big brands around. There are many jewellery houses who make exquisite jewellery and designs, but there stand out a few icons who surpass them all. The reason why these jewellery icons are among the topmost is because they bring something more to the table other than world class designs. Here is a list of the top five global jewellery icons:

1.    Sophie Monet:

Sophie Monet grew up in Los Angeles with her father John Okulick, who was a sculptor and Monet watched him collect wood in his local wood studio through her growing years. Little did she know that one day, she would be one of the topmost jewellery icons of the world, working with the very same material. Her speciality lies in the fact that she has bent wood to form rings and curves that are further designed into earrings and necklaces. Her brand of the same name designs jewellery that is wood-based and is inspired by her frequent trips around the world. Her artistic flair and Venice’s atmosphere are both showcased in her designs. She mainly experiments with the thickness, surface area and texture of wood in her jewellery.

2.    Leigh Miller:

Leigh Miller had worked with big brands including Calvin Klein and J. Crew before she quit and finally started her own jewellery brand. Working under these brands suffocated her and according to her, the ‘healthier’ alternative was making jewellery which allowed her to work at her own pace. Right now, she releases two designs per year at maximum.

Her designs are inspired from the topographical patterns and natural landscapes. Leaves, whirlpools, and pebbles are a few things that can be found in her works. The material used in her jewellery, especially gold necklaces, is predominantly silver and sometimes semi-precious colourful gemstones in addition. Her designs are mostly abstract.

3.    Kathleen Whitekar:

Kathleen Whitaker flew to Los Angeles from New York and the energy of the city spoke to her immediately. She says that the city provided her with the necessary space and liberation for her to work on her creativity. Her designs have mainly been minimal but very recently she has been adding bits of colourful stones to them.

Her brand was launched in 2003 with a collection of geometric patterns in 14-carat gold. Her gold studs are still one of her bestsellers, mainly because they are accessible to the masses. These pieces of jewellery start from as low as $40 and are produced in all sizes and shapes, be it a sequin or a slender stick.

4.    Sophie Buhai:

Sophie Buhai left New York to come back to her hometown in Los Angeles and still credits the country for her creative outlet. She believes that there is something about Los Angeles that allows an artist to be free to do his own art without any barrier. According to Buhai, the city has lesser formalities when it comes to the creative front.

She launched her own brand a year after she flew down to Los Angeles, which had pieces of jewellery tastefully curated by Buhai herself. Her designs always have a personal touch to them. She designs jewellery in gold and silver mainly but her seasonal stocks are made up of limited materials such as pearl and black onyx. The sleek egg pendant is still one of her bestsellers and she is known for her gold bracelets.

5.    Legier Biederman:

Legier Biederman has a Ph.D. in art history and most of her works revolve around stones. She gets rocks and stones from California and shapes them into rectangular and circular pieces to create her own jewellery. Her jewellery is inspired largely from the land art movements of the late 1960s and post-minimalism.

However, they can also be interpreted as simple aesthetics. Even Legier Biederman credits Los Angeles for providing her with the freedom for her creative workspace.

The number of the jewellery icons in the world is countless but only a handful make it to the list of the topmost ones. They are all a brand by themselves and the pieces of jewellery made by them are elegant. The materials used are a class apart. They are extravagant but given the quality that you receive in return, the price paid is totally worth it.
