Top 5 Mistakes Made by EPDM Roofers

by Shawn William Creative Writer

The membrane system of a roof is the lifeline for your home. It protects your property from external elements and keeps moisture inside your house. If it doesn’t, EPDM Roofers, you will be left with a ruined roof and perhaps even more costly repairs. Here are tips to help reduce the risk of making mistakes when working on EPDM Roofers Essex systems:

Don’t use too much EPDM rubber
EPDM rubber is a 1:16 ratio of rubber to polymer. Exposing the roof substrate to an excessive amount of rubber could cause it to not breathe properly and fail. If you find you have to use more rubber than recommended, take action as soon as you notice the issue. If a membrane is exposed to too much rubber, it could cause the roof not to breath properly and fail. Dumping more on the roof than you need to seal the joint between the substrate and the membrane is wasting rubber.

Don’t skimp on the adhesion agent
Adhesion agent allows the rubber to bond with the roofing substrate. If the adhesion agent is not at the right strength, the rubber will not properly bond to the roofing substrate. This could cause the rubber to stretch, crack, or fall off the roof. Exposing a membrane to an insufficient amount of adhesion agent also has potential to cause leaks.

Be careful when mixing the rubber and adhesives
EPDM rubber needs to be mixed with a polymer to form a solution. This solution is applied using a roll roofing system. Tools used to mix the rubber must be kept away from the polymer to avoid contamination. If the polymer becomes contaminated, it could become brittle or thicken, resulting in a leak or poor adhesion.

Keep your tools sharp and clean
EPDM roofing is a precision process and your tools must be clean, sharp, and free of contamination for the process to work properly. If your tools are dirty, contaminated, or not sharp, you risk ruining the roof. Properly maintaining your tools will help keep them in great condition, which will reduce downtime for your business.

Conclusion
Whatever mistakes you don’t make will allow you to seal your roof joints, protect your home from the elements, and even earn a valuable seal of approval for your business from your customers.
