Tips to Help Your Kids Practice Good Dental Hygieneby Manoj Rajan Dentist in Chennai
Kids need to practice good oral hygiene and dental care to help maintain their dentition in the right condition. The oral care habits they inculcate, learn and practice during childhood last a lifetime. The following are some of the important aspects that kids and parents have to keep in mind for proper dental health.
Food and Drink
The type of food and the timing of food matter. Sticky foods that are high in sugar like candies etc can cause cavities. Milk with sugar should not be given at night after tooth brushing as it can cause cavities. Foods that have a high mineral and fibre content are good for the teeth. Very acidic drinks and sugary drinks should be avoided. Children should be encouraged to chew the food slowly before swallowing. They should also drink lots of water for hydration as well as to neutralize the cavity-forming acids.
Tooth brushing and flossing
Kids should brush and floss their teeth morning and night. They should also wash their mouth after every meal. Parents should monitor brushing habits and techniques. Flossing is good to remove plaque in between teeth. However, if some kids find it difficult a water jet can be used.
Regular Dental Checkups
Annual dental health checks will help in catching issues like early cavities and treat the problem. A dental coating of sealant and fluoride varnish can help prevent cavities
