Things you must know before taking the IELTS exam

As a professional IELTS trainer, and someone who has helped thousands of aspirants surpass the minimum IELTS score for Canada PR, I am often asked – “Is it possible to prepare for the IELTS exam? The simple answer is: YES! 

I see how important it is for candidates to know the basics of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) before they appear for the exam. Although it is not possible to know everything, there are a few things you can learn about this renowned examination, such as the type of questions asked, the examination format, appropriate answers, and so on.

Here are some tips you should know before taking the IELTS exam.

 

  1. Understand the schedule and format 

Knowing the schedule and format can help you effectively prepare, and give a heads-up on the IELTS exam. Let us start with the basics: the reading, listening, and writing tests are all scheduled and completed on the same day – generally with no breaks in between. Speaking tests are usually conducted on different days. 

In addition to understanding the schedule, having an idea about the format of each section of the exam is also important. 

  • Speaking 

There are three sections to the Speaking test. This includes short and long questions, as well as structured discussions with the IELTS examiner. The Speaking test can last anywhere between 11 and 14 minutes, and while you can’t plan for this IELTS section ahead of time, you can be prepared by the type of questions you could be asked.   • Reading 

The Reading test has three sections and lasts for 60 minutes. Being one of the easiest sections that can help you achieve the minimum IELTS score for Canada PR, you will be using a variety of skills in this IELTS section including skimming, reading for main ideas, and more. Take note that there are two versions of the Reading test: the Academic Version and the General Training Version.

  • Listening

The Listening test is 30 minutes and includes four different recordings including monologues and conversations. Questions can be asked on a variety of topics, and you can listen to each recording, only once. The Listening section plays a pivoting role in the IELTS exam, and in turn your points in the CRS score calculator

  • Writing

The Writing test has two sections and lasts for 60 minutes. The first section includes writing a minimum of 150 words, while the second section requires you to write a 250 words write-up. Just like the Reading test, the Writing test also has two versions i.e., the Academic Version and the General Training Version. 

  1. Know what your examiner is looking for 

This step is also crucial, for candidates seeking to surpass the minimum IELTS score for Canada PR. Try to identify what the examiner will be looking forward to, in the Speaking and Writing test. Knowing this, you'd better be able to focus your thoughts, and give the kind of answer the examiner is looking for. 

  1. Practice

Scour the web for previous year’s question bank and sample papers. Solving such IELTS simulators and question banks will help you get an idea of the type of questions to expect in your IELTS exam. Practicing on a regular basis will also help you get the required pace to tackle all the IELTS sections in the allotted duration.
