The Types of Cement You Will Find

by Pooja Late so cut

When we think about using cement in construction, we assume that one type fits all. This is far from true. Cement manufacturers have tried their best to make the customers understand that there are many different types of cement products. There are many types of cement available in the market and they all have varied uses as well.

Before we begin talking about the different kinds of cements, we should also talk about gypsum plaster and plaster of paris. These are plasters that are used for the protective or decorative coating of walls and ceilings. Mostly, these are used to put in the finishing touches of the structure, rather than when a structure is being built. The key difference between the two is the facts that Gypsum contains calcium sulphate dehydrate and plaster of paris contains calcium sulphate hemihydrates.  We should also remember that gypsum is a naturally occurring mineral. The water content in a molecule differs from each other for these gypsum plaster and plaster of paris.

Coming back to the structure that needs to be built, one cannot make a structure stand without the help of cement. Our comprehensive list below will act as a guideline for you to understand which cement product you need to choose in order to meet your needs.

The Different Types of Cement

Rapid Hardening Cement achieves high strength in early days, and it is mostly used where formworks have been removed at an early stage. This kind of cement is used in prefabricated construction, road works and the like.

Next on our list is the quick setting cement, which despite being similar to rapid hardening cement, sets earlier. The formwork for this as well as that can be removed earlier.

Low heat cement is another form which is prepared by maintaining the percentage of tricalcium aluminate below 6% by increasing the proportion of C2S. The properties of this cement makes it ideal for use in the mass concrete construction like gravity dams, for the low heat of hydration would prevent cracking of the concrete due to heat.

White Cement is prepared from raw materials free from iron oxide and is a type of ordinary cement which is just white in colour. This cement is on the costlier side, and is used for architectural purposes. This cement is mostly used for precast curtain wall, facing panels, terrazzo surface and the like. The interior and exterior decorative work such as the renderings of buildings, facing slabs, floorings and ornamental concrete products, the garden path, swimming pool etc. makes the use of white cement as well.

Expansive Cement is one which expands slightly with time and does not shrink during and after the time of hardening. This cement is mainly used for grouting anchor bolts and pre-stressed concrete ducts.

The cement manufacturers have come with unique products such as the coloured cement as well, which is used mostly for decorative purposes. When you are thinking about renovating your house, you should look into the kind of cement products that is provided by the cement factory.
