The Chemicals That’ll Help You To Get Your Pool’s Water Balance Just Right

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

One of the aspects of swimming pool ownership that it is most important for newcomers to appreciate, is that it does not exactly have a ‘plug and play’ level of immediacy.

One of the ways in which this is especially true, is when it comes to maintaining the appropriate water balance in your pool. Levels of pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness in pool water need be within ‘safe’ limits if problems are not to arise.

So, what’s the chemistry that you need to know about?

In a nutshell, pH measures the extent to which pool water is acid or alkaline (basic). The scale runs from 0 to 14, and for your pool water to be neutral – in other words, neither acid nor alkaline – it needs to be around the pH 7 mark.

You won’t want your pH to veer far from this happy balance, partly because especially acidic water – by which we mean, water with a pH below 7 – can cause such issues as eye irritation and the corrosion of metal components.

Meanwhile, if your pool water has a pH value of more than 7 – and is therefore alkaline – chlorine in the pool won’t be as effective at destroying bacteria and controlling the growth of algae.

It’s a similar story when it comes to other aspects of your pool’s water balance. Total Alkalinity (TA), for example, is a close cousin of pH, buffering your pH so that it is more stable.

Strictly speaking, TA is a measure of the hydroxides, carbonates and alkaline substances in your pool water, but the important thing to know is that an overly low TA will make for erratic pH levels in your pool. Alkalinity Increaser could therefore be invaluable from time to time for boosting your pool water’s TA, to help to stabilise pH levels.

Finally, calcium hardness is another vital factor. This is really just a reference to the hardness or softness of the water, given that harder water has higher calcium or magnesium content. If your pool water’s calcium hardness is too great, scale deposits and water cloudiness may arise, while if calcium hardness is too low, the water’s softness could cause the corrosion of pool surfaces.

You can source a complete range of essential swimming pool chemicals from us

While water balance chemicals are just one subcategory of the various swimming pool chemicals that it is crucial to be aware of, it is nonetheless a very significant subcategory. For one thing, the better balanced the water in your pool is, the more effectively chlorine will be able to work.

Such items in the Pool Warehouse online store as pH Minus, pH Plus and Calcium Hardness therefore play an imperative role in taking the stress out of day-to-day swimming pool ownership.

Obtain your swimming pool chemicals like these from us, and you’ll be able to count on often heavy discounts compared to Recommended Retail Prices (RRPs), as well as fast despatch from our stock – and, of course, much greater peace of mind as a swimming pool owner.
