 You won’t want your pH to veer far from this happy balance, partly because especially acidic water – by which we mean, water with a pH below 7 – can cause such issues as eye irritation and the corrosion of metal components.

 Meanwhile, if your pool water has a pH value of more than 7 – and is therefore alkaline – chlorine in the pool won’t be as effective at destroying bacteria and controlling the growth of algae.

 It’s a similar story when it comes to other aspects of your pool’s water balance. Total Alkalinity (TA), for example, is a close cousin of pH, buffering your pH so that it is more stable.

 Strictly speaking, TA is a measure of the hydroxides, carbonates and alkaline substances in your pool water, but the important thing to know is that an overly low TA will make for erratic pH levels in your pool.
