How Can You Get Internet Access In Your Caravan Or Motorhome?

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

In a world as globalised and as closely interconnected as the one we live in now, it’s understandable that if you are forced to go without access to the World Wide Web for even a short time, you might feel like you’ve gone back to the Stone Age!

This begs the question if you are planning a caravan or motorhome break this summer: have you made sure you will be able to continue accessing the Internet?

Is depending on Wi-Fi enough?

Of course, many people make no particular plans for accessing the Internet when they are away on a caravan or motorhome holiday. They may welcome the opportunity to be without it, or bring their smartphone, tablet or laptop and take advantage of whatever Wi-Fi hotspots they manage to find along the way.

Even a lot of caravan sites now have Wi-Fi, but there can be big differences in quality, cost and availability between sites. The Wi-Fi reception in caravan parks and campsites can be patchy as a result of the low power levels and high frequencies used, especially in locations with a lot of vegetation and during periods of heavy rain, as these can absorb the signal.

What about mobile broadband?

If you’re looking for a more reliable connection and are prepared to pay more for it, mobile broadband – an Internet connection using a mobile phone network – is another option.

While you can obviously access the mobile broadband network through your smartphone, your laptops or tablets can also gain access via ‘tethering’ – the turning on of your phone’s personal hotspot. Different networks adopt different attitudes to tethering, with some charging extra, others limiting usage and some not allowing it abroad.

With data roaming charges in the EU having been abolished with effect from 15th June, you can also now look forward to a cheaper mobile broadband experience overseas.

Why not make your experience even better with a 12 volt TV?
