The 3 Key Elements of a Strong Security System for Your Small Business

by Adam Perry Content Editor

As a small business owner, you want to protect your investment and livelihood at all costs. However, unlike large corporations with lots of capital, you may be working with a very tight budget—turning “all costs” into “small costs.” Fortunately, a strong security system for small business doesn’t have to be comprehensive, and nor does it have to be expensive. By ensuring that your security system has the following three elements, you can safeguard your business assets and still have enough money left over to invest in other areas of your business or your personal life.

Efficient System Design

Security camera system design can either make you or break you. The most efficient and cost-friendly designs utilize as little equipment as possible while still allowing you to keep an eye on large portions of your property. Pan-Tilt-Zoom cameras and Fish-Eye view cameras are a little pricey upfront but a single one does the work of multiple cameras. A digital system may be more expensive than analog, but it requires less equipment and negates the need for a full-time monitor, as a digital system allows you to view footage from your smart phone, your computer or any device with an Internet connection. Today’s systems also enable you to set alerts to be sent directly to your phone or email if something out of the ordinary occurs, such as entrance after hours or the opening of a safe.

Resilience

A security system for small business isn’t any good if it goes down on you when you need it the most. When you invest in a system, make sure that it is resilient, and that you can access the footage from anywhere, at any time, even if your building’s systems are knocked out. Many of today’s systems utilize the cloud, allowing users to store and secure data remotely and to send it to various operation centers, that way their system can never really “go down.”

Human Support

Finally, a security system won’t do much good if a real-life human cannot intervene when something goes down. Whether you want to save money and choose to respond to situations on your own, hire someone or some entity to monitor the footage for you or connect your video stream to that of your local police departments, you need to have some sort of monitoring and respond processes in place.

Every business needs a security system in place, no matter how big or small their operations are. Implement a security system for small business with the above three elements, and you can safeguard your business assets on a budget that works for you.
