NHS In The North East Set To Recommend Vaping To Patients

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

How high an authority is happy to promote vaping to those who could benefit most from it? Well, no less than our very own National Health Service, of course! We recently found out that NHS professionals in the North East of England will soon begin advising smokers to consider switching to e-cigarettes for the good of their health – and we can fully understand why.

“No smoke, no tar and no carbon monoxide”

As reported by the Sunderland Echo, recommendations have been provided to the region’s NHS Trusts by an NHS anti-smoking group, based on a harm reduction approach to e-cigarettes.

Dr Tony Branson, clinical lead for the Northern Cancer Alliance, commented: “With e-cigarettes there is no smoke, no tar and no carbon monoxide. E-cigarettes are now proving more popular and it is important that we get across to patients the short-term and longer-term health benefits from quitting smoking tobacco.”

What are the recommendations?

Among the recommendations is advice that healthcare professionals should routinely discuss smoking with patients, including the risks of continuing to smoke, and be open to patients using e-cigarettes. The group has also urged that patients be advised of the substantially less harm vaping is deemed to cause than smoking, with a complete switch from tobacco to e-cigarettes likely to significantly lower the risk to health.

Also emphasised by the Northern Cancer Alliance is that patients do not stand to enjoy health benefits if they start using e-cigarettes, but continue smoking. Nor can e-cigarette use be considered a form of smoking, with the group stating that there is no evidence of harm being caused by exposure to second-hand vape.

Finally, the multi-agency collaborative said that vapers should not be required to share a space with smokers, and there are no known additional specific risks associated with the charging of e-cigarettes.
