Microsoft announced this week that the company plans to end the distribution of its monthly Windows 10 “delta updates” which is starting from Feb. 12, 2019.

As an alternative of the delta updates, now the Microsoft expects from the organizations to use the Express Updates each month for the Windows 10. With the express updates, the Windows 10 software differentials or changed get easily delivered to an organization’s which is computing environment from the Microsoft’s content delivery network.

Since a Delta update is a kind of the monthly quality update for the Windows 10 which automatically delivers the changes to the existing OS components, but it will only install if the earlier month’s quality update is present on that. In comparison by an express update, the content delivery network will push down both missing and also some new quality update elements, apart from the computing environment’s monthly Windows 10 patch status.

How the Microsoft’s Announcement Described the Workings of Express Updates?
A device influencing express updates will use the network procedure to determine the optimal differentials, and then download only what is actually needed, and also which is typically approx 150-200 MB in size each month. Eventually, the more up to date a device is then smaller the size of the differential download. However, the devices which are directly connected to the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), System Center Configuration Manager, or a third-party update manager which supports the express updates and also will receive these smaller payloads.

The announcement by the Microsoft explained that the delta updates leaned to have the larger file sizes which are around 300MB to 500MB and then also express updates as the delta updates have the full component not just only the individual files.

However, the use of the express updates can lower the bandwidth hits which organizations have to face each month with the Windows 10 quality updates. The Quality updates are the cumulative updates which generally mean that they contain some past OS updates along with some new updates for the existing Windows 10 components.

The Microsoft will estimate that it’s a monthly cumulative update for the Windows 10 which start out at approximately 100MB to 200MB in size but then also increase to 1GB to 1.2GB in size in almost about six to eight months. Also, the Microsoft has full updates for the Windows 10 which is more than 1GB in size.

The announcement indicated that since the Microsoft glimpses that express updates as being an enhanced distribution mechanism for the monthly quality updates. It is only continuing to allocate the delta updates until the February 12 end date because it will provide companies and also third-party update management tools time to implement some support for the express updates.

Besides to delivering the monthly quality updates, now the Microsoft has feature updates for the Windows 10. They are very different from the monthly quality updates as they bring some new features to the OS instead of updating the existing OS components. The Feature updates are very new OS versions which usually arrive twice per years such as in the spring and the fall.
