Management of Bartholin's gland Cyst With Ayurvedic Remedies

Abstract

A positive, delightful, and worth seeking mental state is known as pleasure. Sexual pleasure is the one that plays an important role. The most common hindrance in sexual pleasure is Bartholin's cyst. It is the inflammation of the Bartholin's gland due to some obstruction in the duct. This obstruction leads to the secretion of fluid results in cyst formation. In Ayurveda, this is correlated with Yonikanda and can be treated with herbal formulations without any surgical procedure.

What is Bartholin's gland cyst?

Bartholin's gland cyst is the inflammation of Bartholin's gland situated on both sides of the vaginal opening. Their main function is to lubricate the vagina during sexual intercourse and keeps it moist. Due to some obstruction in the ducts, there is an accumulation of fluid and mucus in the glands resulting in the formation of the cyst. If this cyst left untreated, abscess formation occurs.

Ayurvedic correlation of Bartholin's Cyst

In Ayurveda, we can correlate Bartholin's cyst with Yonikanda.

This Sanskrit shloka says that due today sleeping, excessive anger, exercise, sexual intercourse, and ulceration by nail and thorns, the doshas aggravate and produce a Kanda (protuberant structure) in an irregular round shape. Its color is yellowish and blood red. This disease is known as Yonikanda.

Symptoms of Bartholin's Cyst

Bartholin's cyst and abscess occur only on one side of the vaginal wall (vulva).

The symptoms of Bartholin's cyst include:

1. Painful and tender Lump on vulva
2. Dyspareunia (pain during intercourse)
3. Pyrexia
4. Difficulty in walking
5. Vaginal discharge

Causes of Bartholin's Cyst

The main cause of Bartholin's Cyst is obstruction or blockage of the duct which is responsible for the accumulation of fluid. The obstruction can be due to the following reason(s).

1. Infection
2. Injury to vaginal wall or opening
3. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)

Types of Bartholin's Cyst

In Ayurveda, Bartholin's cyst is of four types. A Sanskrit verse mentions about the four types of Yonikanda (Bartholin's cyst).

1. Vataja Yonikanda- Vataja Yonikanda is dry, rough and discolored with cracked appearance.
2. Pittaja Yonikanda- The analogous symptoms of pittaja Yonikanda are Burning sensation, redness and fever.
3. Kaphaja Yonikanda- Kaphaja Yonikanda is having color like Atasi flower (bluish) associated with itching.
4. Sannipataja Yonikanda-This type contains symptoms of all the doshas.

Diagnosis of Bartholin's cyst

Bartholin's cyst can be diagnosed by:-

1. Pelvic examination
2. Biopsy
   
   

With the physical examination, the cyst may be felt and palpated. For further clearance, a biopsy may be done to rule out Sexually transmitted diseases (STD's).
