Stone formation & Laser Surgery for Removal of Kidney Stones

Kidney works like a filter in our body. Here wastes are filtered from blood along side urine. These wastes dissolve completely in the urine and excreted. Some waste particles will not dissolve completely. These undisolved waste forms stones. These stones originate as microscopic particles and over time it forms stone. Our body has its own natural ways that prevent creation of stones. Urine has chemicals like Citrate, Magnesium and Pyrophosphate. These chemicals prevent the formation of stones by helping decompose undisolved wastes. When these chemicals are in low level you are helpless. High concentrations of calcium oxalate or Uric acid in the body also form stones in kidney. Smaller stones may just cause discomfort when urinating. Bigger ones may leace kidney and get stuck in the tube before bladder.

Laser Surgery for Removal of Kidney Stones

Laser lithotripsy is a technique that uses process of dissolving the stone in kidney. This uses flexible laser fiber. This fiber is inserted through an endoscope in to urethra to find the stone which is in the urine bladder. The fiber locates the stone. Ho: YAG laser which is used in Laser Surgery for Removal of Kidney Stones is then activated and stones are fragmented. Alternately ‘holmium’ laser can be used. This laser has ablative and hemostatic properties.

Ureteropyeloscopy is another of the laser assisted kidney stone removal surgery. The instrument has optic fibers that can be inserted up urethra up to kidney. The Ureteropyeloscope has ports to accommodate lasers. The procedure can be monitored on a TV. This method destroys stones by fragmentation.

If the stone size is less than 4 mm fragmentation method may be preferred. If the stone is 5-7 mm or more holmium laser helps vaporize the stones.
