Is Facebook dusting off Mark Zuckerberg’s promise of a new privacy feature?

by Jack Tucker IT Support Engineer

Facebook was set on a back foot after the disclosure of Cambridge Analytical privacy scandal. During the month of March, the data of Facebook users was breached with a minor bug leading to very significant consequences. It turned out to be the darkest hour for Facebook and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Around 6.8 million Facebook users were informed about the breach calming in exposing their personal photos and data to advertisers by a bug. After this Facebook announced for launching a new privacy feature that would ensure the safety of the user’s data, well at least that is what they said.

This new feature was mentioned in the blog posted by Mark Zuckerberg who promised to include a new privacy feature to “Clear history” which would restrict Facebook to collect any data of users for commercial purposes. This was done since advertisers gathered the search history of users to show them advertisements according to their interests, and in return earned money from receiving views on advertised videos.

Although it has been around seven months after announcing the new privacy feature by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, it is still not expected to come any time sooner. This new feature namely “Clear History” will let the users decide to clear the search history completely from their account or remove selected information only. This feature would stop the manipulation of search history and won’t let the advertisers know, which individual is searching for what, which would prevent the advertisers from targeting any specific individual for receiving videos or advertisements.

As this new feature was promised by Mark Zuckerberg to be added within a few months, it was anticipated to have been realized by now. But according to the Recode, this feature would still require several more months for users to avail it. According to Baser, thehead of the privacy team has said that they didn’t realize before that it would be so complicated for them to inculcate new privacy feature for Facebook users. But they are working hard to add this feature, and we may see it in a few months from now. Hopefully, Facebook should be able to figure it out, or it would be quite frustrating for the users to be in constant fear of losing their data. Moreover, if Facebook doesn’t resolve this issue as their utmost priority, it may result in a loss in the active user base due to lack of trust and no active response for protecting user’s personal data.
