Irregular Periods: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment

Women are prone to experience irregular periods at least ones in their lifetime. It could be due to several reasons like stress, birth control pills or any other cause.   • IUD use: An IUD can make your menses irregular.
  • A change in your birth control pills: If you change your pills with a different blend of estrogen or progesterone, you may have irregular menses till your body gets used to it.
  • Too much exercising: A lot of physical stress can affect your period timing and sometimes stop it.

  • PCOS: This is a hormonal problem that indicates the presence of high levels of male hormones. It may lead to ovarian problems, leading to missed periods.

  • Breastfeeding or pregnancy: during your pregnancy, your periods completely stop. And, breastfeeding affects your periods too. The hormone which helps in breast milk production affects the hormone which regulates the periods.

  • Stress: Stress can cause irregular periods. As stress impacts a large part of your brain, it affects the hormone levels of your body too.

  • Thyroid problem: The thyroid problem can cause the production of too much or too little hormones. If you have a large period duration with heavy bleeding, then it is a hypothyroidism condition, when the thyroid is less active. When you have short and light periods, then your thyroid gets overactive leading to hyperthyroidism.

Two major health issues that can lead to irregular periods are polycystic ovary syndrome and thyroid disease. 

Another health issue which can lead to irregular periods is uterine fibroids. Fibroids are lumps that grow on your uterus lining. Some of the symptoms related to this disease are cramping, frequent urination, heavy bleeding, and cramping.
 
How to treat irregular periods?

You can opt for some home remedies as irregular periods of treatment. Make sure you keep a track of your periods every month first and find out if you are experiencing irregular periods. Detect some of the symptoms too so that you can discuss it with your doctor. Some other irregular periods of treatment methods include:

Yoga: Yoga helps in relieving stress. You don’t need to attend special classes to do it perfectly. You can just check out some online beginner poses and just focus on breathing and relaxing poses to de-stress your body. If you are less stressed, then you can make your periods more regular.

Have a normal body weight: If you are obese, then you may experience intense bleeding. If you are highly underweight, then also you may experience irregular menses. Hence, it is important to consume a healthy diet and maintain a normal weight.

Exercise well, but don’t overstress your body: Exercise is a good way to maintain normal body weight, which will eventually make your menses regular. But, if you do too much exercise, then it will have an adverse effect and lead to irregular periods. Hence, make sure you just exercise for 30 minutes, thrice a week.
Ginger: Some proofs showcase that your daily intake of ginger helps in lowering the amount of blood loss during irregular menses. It may also help in relieving cramping.

When should you visit a doctor?

As your hormone levels are highly sensitive and change rapidly, women are likely to experience irregular menses once in their lifetime. However, you should medical assistance, when:

1. You miss three or more periods.
2. Your periods have always been normal but have suddenly got abnormal.
3. Your periods occur before 21 days.
4. You don’t get your periods even after 35 days.
5. Your periods are very painful
6. They last more than a week

It is an irregular period myth that your period cycle will only remain for 28 days. It does change, but any frequent change is worth noticeable. Go for a physical examination and find out the problem.
