Important Maintenance Tips for Dentures

by Jeremy Thompson Web Marketer
Dentures are removable plates that hold one or more artificial teeth, and are one of the most common dental appliances among people. As they are designed to replace your natural teeth, they need to be cleaned and maintained properly to prevent damage and other fungal infection. If you have dentures, then this blog post by Dentistry on Dusk will come in handy as we go over a few maintenance tips that will keep your dentures in good condition. Keep reading to find out more.

  • Preserve in Water

To provide stability, the base material of dentures is made from polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). This dental solution is pre-wetted as water is mixed into the material. Therefore, to prevent dentures from getting dry or warped, they should be stored in water when not in use. Dry and deformed dentures must be replaced without delay.

  • Handle with Care

You should avoid mishandling the dentures as they can’t withstand mistreatment. If they fall on any hard surface, they will break. So, when inserting or removing them, make sure you’re standing over a sink full of water or a folded towel which will save them from breaking.

  • Rinse Them After Every Meal

Dentures get stained easily and should be cleaned thoroughly after every meal. Use a soft-bristled brush to sanitize the dentures at least once a day to remove food particles and other debris. If it’s not possible to do this all the time, rinse it carefully after consuming any food.

  • Use a Solution to Clean Them

You should clean your dentures with a mild soap solution to kill the germs when not in use. But, do not use hot water to clean them as that will damage them. You can also use an ultrasonic cleaner to get rid of tough stains. The dental appliance is soaked in a mini bath-like contraption and the sound waves are released for the cleaning process. But, this cleaning shouldn’t replace regular maintenance of the denture.

  • Visit a Dentist Regularly

You should visit your dentist once every six months to keep a check on the dentures. They will be able to detect any oral issue and fix it beforehand. You should also get a check-up from a dental hygienist for a thorough cleaning that will remove built-up plaque and other fungal infections.

  • What to Avoid

  1. Stiff-bristled brushes and harsh toothpaste: They can damage the dentures.
  2. Whitening toothpastes: They contain peroxide that can change the colour of the denture teeth.
  3. Products containing bleach: They can weaken them and change their colour.
  4. Soaking dentures with metal attachments in chlorine solution: This can tarnish the metal.
