How to Use Picture-in-Picture in iOS 14

by Natalie Atkinson I'm a web Developer

Recently Apple has launched its new software iOS 14 with full of awaited features and functionalities. Among those features, one such feature is the Picture-in-Picture mode through which you can play your video content and navigate your phone at the same time. This feature will allow your video content to display in a small window while the application is open or once you leave. This floating window will keep on showing on the top of other applications you use.

Almost every application is supporting this feature like Prime Video, Netflix, Apple TV, but YouTube is still unavailable for picture-in-picture mode.

In this article, we will mention how you can enable the picture-in-picture mode in your Apple smartphone:

Before enabling Picture-in-Picture mode, make sure you have the updated software in your Apple smartphone, and all your applications are up-to-date. Choose your video content on your preferred application and head to your home screen. You can do that in two different ways:

  • Swipe up from the bottom of your phone.
  • Press the home button if you have one.

Once you perform this function, you will be redirected to your home screen while keeping your content still playing in a small window. Now you can navigate through your phone and perform multiple tasks like sending a text message, open a document, reply to emails, and more. No matter, whatever action you perform, your video content will keep on playing unless you close it by clicking on the close button on the upper right corner of the small window.

Not only you can move that small video content window anywhere on the screen as per your convenience, but you can also hide it entirely by tapping on the small arrow located at the bottom right corner of your screen.

Once you complete your tasks, you can unhide the small video content window by tapping on the window. Once you tap it, you will get options like pause, close, or return the full-screen view mode. You can choose the appeared options as per your convenience.

Please note that the picture-in-picture mode is compatible with Apple’s default application. Still, in the case of third-party applications, the developer has to implement support to enable this feature for its users. Some applications like Netflix and Prime Video are already supporting this function. You can use Picture-in-Picture mode with various functionalities like on the web, with FaceTime, and more. You can also customize the size of the small window as per your convenience.
