How To Know If One Needs to Consult With Psychiatrist?

by Diksha Sharma Blogger and writer

As human beings, we're all unique in so many wonderful ways. Each of us has particular traits and flaws that make us endearing to some and annoying to others. But if something is unique, does that also mean it is not normal? After all, normal is one of the most subjective words we have in the dictionary. What's normal to one is bizarre to another. And what seems normal at age three may be considered abnormal at age 33. To help you, here are some signs which show that you need to consult a depression psychologist.

Sometimes it is not possible to know for sure without an evaluation by a psychiatrist, psychologist, or other mental health professional. However, there are some signs and reliable indicators that show the need for treatment. Following are ten signs that you need to seek professional help:

You're having a challenging time coping in general

This is one of the first and most noticeable signs that show you need to seek help from a mental health professional. Basic coping skills and functioning are crucial if you want to live your life without depending on someone else to take care of you. If you've observed that you're not able to function as well as you once did, or in a way that would be reasonable to expect from a person of your health and age, and there's no reasonable explanation ( for instance, you're suffering from some other medical condition such as cold, fever), then this is a sign. Any observable change compared to the previous functioning is problematic and warrants an evaluation.

You feel sad, hopeless, or down most of the time

This is often a sign of depression and is one of the most common mental health conditions. While occasional feelings of sadness or feeling "down" are a normal part of being human, it is not normal for them to last for long periods of time. If other symptoms are present as well, such as poor concentration, low energy, and feelings of hopelessness, sleep disturbances, depression is a very possible diagnosis. If left untreated, depression can cause significant problems, which, in turn, affects the depression even more. For some individuals, depression can also trigger suicidal thoughts and actions, potentially resulting in a tragic outcome.

You can't forget the past or recent traumatic events.

Trauma turns your life upside down and can take a severe toll on your mind. Unwanted images and memories are often left, thus leaving you with the awful sense that you're stuck, and there seems to be no way to heal and move on.

If you've experienced any kind of trauma in your life, whether recently or past it can come back to haunt you in distinct ways such as nightmares, disturbing flashbacks, severe anxiety, and painful emotions.

Some of the other signs are:

People have noticed some change about you and said something to you

Nothing you have done seems to help.

You have a troubled relationship with food

      You worry excessively

      You are having suicidal thoughts

If you have noticed any of the signs as mentioned above in you, it is time to see a psychiatrist. Just search: “counselling psychologist near me" or "psychotherapist near me", you will get the names of good consultants.
