How to Fix “Hard drive not detected” on Windows 10?

Sometimes the computer fails or simply refuses to detect the Hard Drive even after confirming the successful connection. The issue crops up usually when the device driver is either corrupted or outdated. In order to fix this issue, apply the solutions mentioned below. 


Through Disk Management

You should pursue these instructions given below:

  1. Go to the Windows icon on your system and right-click on it.
  2. After that, select the Disk Management option.
  3. Then you can view the list of drivers.
  4. Select the one that can’t be recognized by the system. It can be notified as an Unallocated partition.
  5. Thereafter, right-click on it and choose the ‘Change drive letter and paths’ option.
  6. Go to the Add option to launch the screen of ‘Add Drive Letter or Path.’
  7. You should click on the ‘Assign the following drive letter’ and then select your drive’s letter.
  8. Later, choose the OK button and shut the running screens.
  9. Now, restart the system.

Uninstall and Reconnect the External Drive

  1. Navigate to the Windows icon and click on it.
  2. Then click on the Device Manager.
  3. Go to the Disk Drives and extend it.
  4. You should right-click on each item.
  5. Thereafter, choose the Uninstall button.
  6. Now, reboot the system.

Check the Hard Drive Status

  1. Hold the Windows and R buttons to launch the Run dialog.
  2. Thereafter, insert ‘devmgmt.msc’ into it and hit the Enter key to open the Device Manager.
  3. You should extend the Disk Drive, then select the drive and right-click on it.

Update the Driver

  1. Hold the Windows and R buttons o to launch the Run dialog.
  2. Then input ‘devmgmt.msc’ into the section and press the Enter key.
  3. You should extend the Disk drives option and locate another disk drive.
  4. Right-click on the Update driver software option.

Install the USB Controllers Again

You should pursue these instructions given below:

  1. Press the Windows and R keys to launch the Run dialog.
  2. After that, type ‘devmgmt.msc’ and press the OK button to launch the Device Manager.
  3. You should extend the ‘Universal Serial Bus controllers’ option.
  4. Later, go to each drive, and right-click on it and click the Uninstall button.
  5. Now, restart the USB controllers.
