How Often Do Australians Service Their Cars?

by Roselands Auto Lakemba Mechanic

When you take your car to your local Belmore mechanic for its regular service do you ever wonder whether how your car ownership habits compare to those of your fellow Australians?

Last year, Australia’s leading online car service booking website, AutoGuru released the results of a survey that they commissioned that looked at the cars that Australians owned and how often they serviced them. The results may surprise you.

The Age of Australian Cars

According to their survey, 40% of the cars owned by Australians are between 5 and 10 years old, while another 40% are either new or up to 4 years old. Only 15% of Aussies have cars that are over 10 years old.

How Often Do Australian Drivers Hit the Road?

Well it seems that as a nation, we drive a lot. Over 70% of us drive daily, while 20% hit the road 2-3 times per week.

How Well Do We Treat Our Cars?

Depending on the make, model and age of your car, it can prove to be a considerable investment. So, you would expect that owners would take care to make sure that their vehicle is regularly serviced. And you would be right! 57% of us take our car for a service twice a year, while 35% ensure that their car is serviced annually. As for the remaining 8% - they admit to not servicing their car regularly.

Why do Car Owners opt for Regular Servicing?

One reason why so many people take their car for 6 monthly and annual services is probably due to the age of their car. A large number of vehicles in Australia are less than 5 years old which means that they’re likely to be covered by the warranty and so are sticking to the servicing specified in the logbook.  However, this reason was only cited by 26% of owners as their main driver for getting their cars serviced.

Despite having to stick to logbook services, over 60% of the people undertaking the survey claimed that their main reason for regular services was mainly down to safety issues, while 10% of owners wanted to keep their car running smoothly so that they can keep its resale value as high as possible.

Have Car Owners Missed Services?

70% of us say that we’ve never missed a service while 30% did admit to missing at least one. Reasons for missing services included being too busy to fit it in or forgetting that it was due. However, 60% of people who chose to skip a service said it was due to cost!

In Conclusion

On the whole, Australia’s car owners are a conscientious lot. Most of us service our cars in line with the logbook and we see safety as our number one priority. This all sounds like good news for Lakemba mechanics!
