How Long You Should Wait to Exercise Post Breast Reduction Surgery

by Dr Rajat Gupta - RG Aesthetics Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon

While big breasts may seem all the rage, this is far from the truth. Instead, more women are valuing smaller, more manageable breasts now more than ever. They find large breasts a burden they do not see the need to bear. While many try workouts to reduce breast size, they often find that surgery is the only answer. Post breast reduction exercises they previously could not do become possible again, much to their delight.

Breast reduction or reduction mammoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes a portion of breast tissue to reduce the breast’s size. Many women experience virginal or breast tissue hypertrophy, meaning their breasts are abnormally large. Since the problem lies in the breast tissue, only surgery can help and remove it.

Post Breast Reduction Exercises – How Long You Should Wait

While exercise does not help reduce the breast’s size, it can help keep your breasts perky and youthful afterward. Many women get a breast lift or mastopexy alongside their reduction mammoplasty for enhanced results. Mastopexy involves tightening and restructuring the breast tissue in a way that helps the nipple-areola complex lift from its previous, downward-pointing position.

This procedure has excellent results when combined with reduction mammoplasty, helping a smaller breast’s nipple point upwards, creating a perkier look. Thus, patients get the youthful silhouette they desire.

The inconspicuous incisions made around the nipple-areola complex or in the underside of the breast further improve the procedure’s outcome. The patient has no reason to feel self-conscious after their procedure.

It means that they can continue exercising knowing that they will not have to feel the excessive weight on their chest that may cause them to hunch over or hurt their back during their workouts. This brings us to the recovery timeline after reduction mammoplasty, which will help us further understand when you can resume your workouts.

Recovery Timeline After Breast Reduction Surgery

After this daycare procedure, you can go home. Just ensure you have someone to drive you home since you should not drive immediately after surgery. Your recovery timeline will follow these milestones:

24-48 hours of swelling, bruising, and discomfort

Waiting three days before returning to your sitting job

      Driving only after one week

One month for all bruising, swelling, and discomfort to              subside

Wearing a compression garment for six weeks

Six to eight weeks post breast reduction; exercises can be       resumed

Your results continue improving over time as you heal from your surgery. They get better with each passing day, especially if you follow all the post-op instructions your doctor gives you. Furthermore, you can resume your regular workouts after six weeks – a must to stay healthy and prevent your newly reduced and lifted breasts from bowing to gravity.

It is also important to remember that such high-quality results and quick recovery are only possible when visiting a board-certified plastic surgeon in Delhi like Dr Rajat Gupta.
