What is the After Care for Hair Transplant?

by Dr Rajat Gupta - RG Aesthetics Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon

Hair transplant procedures involve the surgical removal and implantation of follicular units from donor to recipient sites of the skull. This procedure is the only permanent way to counter problems of balding and thinning hair. The follicular units are alive when they are transplanted, which means that transplanted hair grows as entirely natural at the recipient site.

Hair transplant surgery is advantageous. Under the hand of an expert surgeon, you get unprecedented results and permanent head of hair. The transplanted hair does not even fall! However, there is still a recovery period, as there is for any surgery. Luckily, hair transplant recovery is effortless. Due to the sophisticated methods used today, there are few precautions you need to take during the care for hair transplant. You will soon be able to enjoy your results.

Things to Keep in Mind During Hair Transplant Recovery

The after-effects of your procedure depend on the extent of transplant. While the usual possibility of risks with any surgery apply to hair transplants, keeping in mind your surgeon’s expertise helps. That said, you may experience some mild swelling and bruise for the first 24-48 hours after your procedure. If the aching, excessive tightness or throbbing causes physical discomfort, your surgeon may prescribe painkillers for pain management.

The benefit of a hair transplant is that it is an outpatient procedure. Although performed over a few sessions, the patient never has to stay overnight. They can also resume their daily activities from the day after the procedure. However, they should avoid any sudden movements or strenuous activities that may send blood to their head since that could cause the stitches to rip on the scalp and begin bleeding. That said, they are free to shampoo, dye, or colour their hair as they please. Surgeons even recommend washing your hair two days after the procedure.

A lot of patients are also alarmed by hair loss in the first month of recovery, after selling a hair transplant as a permanent solution, seeing all the transplanted hair fall can be stress-inducing. Luckily, this is another sign that the hair transplant results will be successfully visible. After this initial period, the hair begins regrowing at an average rate of 1cm per month. Therefore, the full results are visible within 8-10 months.

With adequate aftercare, you should be perfectly on track for a beautiful, full head of hair in no time!
