How is Solar Energy Produced and What are the Different Types of Solar Systems?

by Diksha Sharma Blogger and writer

When it comes to solar energy, India is considered an ideal country. With more than 300 sunny days a year, the central government has set a target of achieving 100 GW of installing rooftop solar power plants to move towards renewable sources of energy.

How is Solar Energy Produced?

Solar energy has become a prevalent and most demanded source of energy production in today’s time. For producing solar energy, solar photovoltaic modules are placed on rooftops. When sun rays strike these modules, they convert sunlight into direct current electricity. The DC or direct current is converted into AC by installing an inverter. This conversion from DC to AC is vital because home appliances work on alternating current (AC).

For large consumers where the solar system is more extensive in size, i.e., more than 100kW, a set up of 11 or 33 kV is required by using set-up transformers. The output from the transformer is connected to the main HT panel.

Types of Solar Systems

There are three types of rooftop solar systems available in India, which includes:

Grid-Connected Systems

These are also known as on-grid systems, which are connected to the main grid of your local service provider. Under this system, a solar inverter converts the direct current produced by solar panels into the alternating current that can be used directly at homes or in businesses. If the system has more energy than what is being consumed, the extra produced energy is transferred to the primary electric grid via solar net metering.

It is the most cost-effective method because, at the time of billing electricity, the government or power provider company will adjust the exported units of electricity into your bill. The on-grid system works in collaboration with the power grid.

Off-Grid Solar Systems

These systems are known to work independently but are connected with the batteries that store solar power. The system consists of:

  • Solar Panels

  • Battery

  • Charge Controller

  • Grid Box

  • Inverter

  • Mounting Structure

The solar panel stores enough sunlight during the day and uses the excess energy during the night or less sunny days. The system is self-sustaining and is ideal for businesses that can sustain for a short period with no electricity.

Hybrid System

It is the combination of on-grid and off-grid solar panels. It has a battery bank with an inverter, and the generated power supply is used to supply energy to the connected loads or charge the battery. The hybrid system can also have any other power sources like DG or wind alongside the solar panels.

Investment in solar panels is the best option to save the environment along with saving costs. The O&M rooftop solar is essential for the smooth running of power plants. MYSUN is India’s largest rooftop solar company that operates in multiple states in India. They offer the best solar panels with a 25 years solar service promise package. MYSUN makes it easy for users to solarise and avail the best financial and environmental benefits. To know more about MYSUN, you can visit their website!
