For those on the lookout for the best-quality woodturning tools, one of the most interesting developments in recent years has been the emerging popularity of tools manufactured using M42 steel. However, while one has never been able to doubt this steel’s hugely superior sharpness and edge-holding characteristics, M42 tools have long been prohibitively expensive for many woodturners... until now.

That’s because – would you believe it – a respected UK manufacturer has finally come along to offer M42 gouges that are hugely more affordable than the previous options, and they can only be obtained here in the UK through The ToolPost.

What makes these new M42 gouges so important?

In addition to the aforementioned unbeatable combination of exceptionally high quality and exceptionally low pricing for such a product, the new M42 gouges that we have in stock are important because they are UK-made. Previously, most such tools – such as those in our own Carter Tools range – were from the USA.

To be more specific, these new gouges are made by Sheffield-based Hamlet Craft Tools, which is now part of the Henry Taylor group. Only one other company – Crown Tools – is making such tools for woodturning, and those are not currently being made available for UK distribution. We here at The ToolPost are currently the sole source in the UK for these incredible new Hamlet tools.

The distinguishing feature of these tools is, of course, the M42 steel that, when correctly heat treated, can be brought to an exceedingly sharp edge. Furthermore, that edge is extremely durable, holding its sharpness for a long time. But when compared to the US-made gouges, these Hamlet or Henry Taylor versions are also significantly lower in cost, bringing M42 performance within reach of almost every turner.
