Commercial Electrician Job Description and Requirements
by Victor Lee DIY SpecialistJob Description and Title
Commercial
electrician Brisbane can plan and diagram electrical systems, including
tubing or pipe conduits, typically required by local electrical codes.
Alternatively, the electrician could work from the general contractor's
blueprints. Whether designing the system or working from blueprints, the
electrician builds the conduits and runs the electrical wiring. Switches,
circuit breaker panels, and relays are frequently used to terminate these
lines. Commercial electricians install equipment that controls a building's
power, lighting, and heating.
They also wire air conditioning and refrigeration devices. Commercial
electricians use electrical test meters and ohmmeters to ensure that the
components are compatible and safe. These tests may be carried out as part of
installing a new electrical system to confirm that it is functional. Shorts and
system problems can also be detected using these tests.
The electrician next repairs or replaces the wiring and
conduits as needed after determining the source of the problem. Sawzalls, screwdrivers,
pliers, and knives are standard hand tools commercial electricians use. The
employer may provide heavier equipment. Power tools, test meters, pipe
threaders, and conduit benders are all tools that most electricians are
familiar with. Commercial electrical work is often done indoors and is less
weather-sensitive than other forms of building work.
In 2020, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimated
that roughly 9,710 electricians worked in non-residential building
construction, with an average annual wage of $63,280. According to the BLS,
electricians are predicted to expand at a substantially faster-than-average
pace of 8% from 2019 to 2029.
The job can also be utilized as a springboard into a career
as an electrical engineer. Some universities will accept credits earned as an
electrician toward a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree.
Requirements
Because electrical wiring is often color-coded, commercial
electricians should distinguish between colors. They must stand for lengthy
periods, climb ladders, and remain in awkward positions. They must be able to
lift fifty pounds to eye level regularly.
In most places, anyone without an electrician's license is
prohibited from performing any electrical work on their own (not rented)
property. Completing an associate's degree program or an apprenticeship is
required for these licenses. Some universities offer associate's degree
programs with reduced core education requirements and a clear path through the
program due to a contract with an electrical contractor. To pursue the
training, it would be advantageous if you have a high school diploma or
equivalent. Commercial electricians must determine how much power is being
drawn from their circuits. As a result, anyone considering a career as a
commercial electrician should enroll in algebra studies.
Electrical training programs cover hydraulic and pneumatic
concepts. Students are taught how to use programmable logic controllers and
magnetic motor controllers. Students will install circuits, 1 and 3 motors, and
alarm systems during the course. The differences between single-phase and
three-phase power systems are explored and process metrics. Working with
natural gas delivery systems is a standard part of electrical training.
The Electrician Certification Curriculum Committee criteria
set the curriculum for electrician programs. The National Electrical Code
(NEC), which has over 800 provisions to protect personal and public safety,
governs electrical training standards.
An apprenticeship is the most common way for electricians to
start their profession, but an associate's degree can also be an excellent
place to start academically.
These specialists must have the technical skills necessary
to operate with commercial wire systems and electrical tools and a thorough
knowledge of local and national electrical codes.
With a substantially faster-than-average increase in
employment opportunities, electricians should expect solid job prospects in the
coming decade.
