Call of Duty: Beta for Modern Warfare the Biggest Hit for the Franchise

by karen minton I am a software engineer

It does not matter if you have never played PC or console games, it is still highly likely that you must have heard the name Call of Duty. Such is the popularity and wide fanbase for the classic warfare game. The game initially released back in 2003 and was focused on the events of World War 2. However, with time, the game even covered modern war events like the Cold War. The game is available for almost every major gaming platform like Windows, PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox, iOS, and Android.

Recently, the multiplayer beta tests for the upcoming installment Call of Duty: Modern Warfare came out. The results showed the installment to be the most famous one for the franchise. The developer Infinity ward released a beta version for game’s multiplayer edition. It included a two vs. two alpha and both open and closed beta periods.

CoD comes with a new series every year, and the 2019 one seems to be a massive hit among the fans. Infinity Ward and Activision have marked the installment as both remake and reboot of the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. They are marketing the game as a more realistic and sadist take on the war affairs, along with a step ahead for the CoD formula.

The astonishing production values of the game are clear, but it has had its fair share of controversies as well.  The theme of the movie and its exclusive content deals with PlayStation has earned some backlash for the game. Despite all these controversies, backlash and buzz, the multiplayer beta edition was made available to a wide audience. The beta version was marked successful by Activision’s reports.

Activision stated that the beta was the most successful in CoD history. The tests for beta edition included the most hours played, the highest online players, and the most number of users across all playable platforms combined. Activision did not release the exact number; however, “millions” of users are reported to take part in it.

The tests were taken for two consecutive weeks, which started on September 12 and ended on September 23. The analysis also offered the much-awaited feature, Crossplay. It allows players from different platforms like PS4, PC, or Xbox One to play against each other. This was the first time for Call of Duty to facilitate such function.

The beta offered a chunk of the gameplay which tempted an even higher number of users to play the game. The users could prepare their custom rooms and unlock any weapon of their choice.  The weapons were surprisingly upgradable as well. Of course, the Crossplay feature could be accounted for the significant number of users as well, because it allowed several platforms to compete together. The 64-player Ground War mode along with its latest vehicles, was made available as well. Activision states that the full retail edition of the game can chunk in over 100 players for the multiplayer version.

The game will not have any royal pass or DLC maps. The roadmap has far-reaching content, and if the beta version was any indication, then the game will entertain users for a long time. The marketing campaign will have to keep in mind the weight on its theme. Then the game is sure to be a hit. The fans are understandably excited to play the full version of the game. The expectations from the game have skyrocketed, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
