BIS Mandatory Product List

by Brand Liaison Compliance & Approvals for Indian Market

What is BIS India?

BIS is a national standard body in India that was formulated by the Indian government to provide the best quality products, which are safe to use and are less harmful to consumer's health. The Bureau of Indian Standards provides a certificate to the manufacturers and allows them to sell their products in India. The marking of R-Number or the BIS License Number on the product is mandatory. BIS India was founded on December 26, 1986, and it started its execution on 1 April 1987. It stops the selling of degraded products by Indian and foreign manufacturers. Still, many products are not coming under the BIS.

BIS mandatory product list classification:

BIS is applicable for the different products under the two main schemes which are as given below:

  • BIS registration/CRS- Under this scheme, approximately 70 products are listed as mandatory for registration. These products come from solar photovoltaics, the Electronics & IT industry, LED lights, computers, video cameras, television, bluetooth speakers, rice cooker, mobile phones, laptops, printers, amplifiers, components, and the list goes on.

  • BIS certification/ ISI- Under this scheme, more than 370 products are listed. BIS issues ISI certification for the product in the name of the manufacturer. The products which fall under BIS certification are of different kinds like household electrical goods, switches, batteries, a variety of food products, oil pressure stoves, automobile accessories, cylinders, valves, medical equipment, steel products, transformers, capacitors, electrical motors, chemical, fertilizers, kitchen appliances, air conditioner, cables, and many more.

All these products are tested by the BIS-approved laboratory to check the given standards for production. After that, R-Number or BIS certificate is provided to the product manufacturer. The processing time for getting a BIS certificate for every product may vary.

How does BIS identify the different products?

A large number of products come under the mandatory list of BIS. The best method invented by the BIS to identify the products is to provide a special code. With this code, we can check the guidelines and standards of that particular product without any hassle. This code started with IS(Indian standard) after that the unique code is in the form of numbers. No R-Number is the same as another product in BIS India. BIS codes are also valid in many countries across the globe. The standards are also, the same is defined by the Bureau of Indian Standard.

Why BIS registered product is more reliable?

BIS products are more reliable because of the standardization of products which is set by the BIS. Every manufacturer meets the criteria to produce any type of goods. No manufacturing can go beyond the set requirements of BIS India. The products which come up with BIS registration are not hazardous for health and the environment. Before getting the certificate, goods are tested in the authorized laboratory. This is the main reason to rely on BIS registered products by the customers. Customers prefer to buy BIS-registered products from the market.
