by Dr Vikram Chauhan Doctor

Abstract

Erythema dyschromicum perstans is a rare skin condition in which hyper-pigmentation of skin takes place. It is also known as ashy dermatosis due to the ash- gray color of macules and it may differ in shape and sizes. It occurs mostly in adults but may be seen in children of any age. Aetiology is unknown. The lesions are presented on both sun and non sun exposed areas in which neck, limbs, face and trunk are included. Many people refer to this condition with the lichen planus variant. It affects both genders but females are more affected than males and is usually seen before the age 40. So today we will discuss erythema dyschromicum perstans in this article.

Ayurvedic overview

In ayurveda we can relate this condition with imbalance of vata and kapha dosha which are responsible for skin pigmentation. Vata and kapha dosha vitiation leads to vyanga roga. Vyanga roga is described in the sushrut samhita kshrudrarog nidansthana chapter.

सहसा मुखमागत्य  मण्डलं विसृजत्यत:।

नीरुजं तनुकं श्यावं मुखे व्यंग तमादिशेत।। (Su.samhita Ni.13/46)

According to the above shloka:- Excessive anger and overexertion cause vitiation of vata pitta which leads to sudden appearance of discolored patches (mandalam) on the face. Mandalam is painless, small in size, greyish in colour which is called vyanga.
