Are You Doing Enough To Protect The Items That Your Online Store

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

Many of us who have ever purchased a product online have had that dreaded experience of seeing our ordered item turn up at our doorstep in what can only be described as… less-than-perfect condition. And if that has ever happened to you, the chances are that you considered whether it was a wise choice to purchase from the given online store to begin with.

What we’re trying to say is, if you are the business in this equation, you can’t depend on simply blaming the courier if a customer complains to you that their ordered product has arrived damaged. The condition that the item turns up in will be perceived as reflecting on your business, even if the situation isn’t technically your business’s “fault”.

And of course, there is only so much that an ecommerce outlet can do about the occasional issue of an item sustaining damage in the mail on its way to the customer. There are, though, still some things you can do – including taking the right approaches with the packaging of your store’s sold goods before they get passed to the courier.

Let’s take a look, then, at some of the measures you could adopt to help ensure products reach the customer in optimal condition.

Include warning or ‘fragile’ labels on your packages

You might think to yourself that a mere warning label won’t do much to prevent mishandling of a package. But the fact is, almost anything that you can do to deter anyone who touches the package from treating it too roughly has to be worth doing.

Using labels with a succinct warning message, then, such as “fragile” or “fragile, handle with care”, could help reduce the rate of delivery firms being careless enough to damage the parcels you send out.

Use a strong, good-quality tape to seal the package

It’s an almost disarmingly simple suggestion. But often, packages can meet a disastrous fate due to something as straightforward (and extremely avoidable!) as the box falling open and the contained item sliding out.

And what is a common cause of that calamity? Well, a lot of people packaging sold goods for delivery are guilty of using overly cheap and poor-quality tape to seal their packages.

Remember that as your sent package makes its way through the postal system, potentially across national borders, it could be subject to a range of extreme weather and environmental conditions, such as heat and rain. And if low-quality tape has been used on the parcel, it might well cease to hold at some point, resulting in the parcel opening mid-transit.

So, choosing a sealing tape that really does keep the parcel sealed for the entirety of its journey – including by being strong, resistant to changes in temperature, and difficult to accidentally damage or tamper with – is of the utmost importance.

We would advise you to look, then, for something like reinforced, gummed tape – not just any old masking tape that happens to be on offer for “50% off” at your local store.

Make sure all those awkward gaps in the package are filled

This is something we’ve written about previously here at Shredded-Paper.co.uk – and with many products that you might need to dispatch not exactly being a convenient shape for packaging in a conventional box, those leftover void spaces could be a real issue.

Indeed, over the years, the packaging industry has come up with various ‘void-fill’ solutions for plugging those gaps. Whichever packaging material you use of the options out there – such as tissue paper, bubble wrap, or even “packing peanuts” – they will need to be effective in preventing the contained item from moving around inside the package, as can be a big cause of damage.

This is also where shredded paper packaging, of the kind we can offer here at Shredded-Paper.co.uk, really comes into its own. From a purely practical standpoint, the above materials can have their drawbacks, such as a lack of eco-friendliness, or – as in the case of tissue paper – the materials not providing very good protection for heavier items.

Our shredded paper packaging, however, can more than tick the “eco-friendly” box, with papers available from our store that are made from 100% recyclable material, in addition to being 100% recyclable in turn. And we can offer papers that are much higher-quality than tissue paper, for cushioning those must-not-be-damaged items.

Another major advantage of our shredded paper, though, is that it looks so good. We offer a dizzying array of different colours for shredded paper packaging, so you really can select something from our range that will add a certain sophistication and flair for that moment when the customer opens their parcel.

Great deals on shredded paper are available in our store right now

Would you like to learn more about our broad range of shredded paper options – including both straight-cut and zig-zig varieties – and perhaps even place an order?

If so, please feel free to browse our online store today. We continue to offer all manner of appealing hues for shredded paper in our Spring 2023 collection, so we’re sure you will find something that looks and performs almost “too good” to seem like packaging material.
