Animal Crossing: New Horizons Becomes Second-Best-Selling Video Game in Japan

by Peter Anderson Writer

Nintendo’s life simulation game Animal Crossing: New Horizons has recently achieved a record in the gaming world. The video game has become the second-best-selling video game in Japan. In a tweet posted by Game Date Library, it was mentioned that New Horizons had sold more than 350,000 units on the domestic front, bringing its sales to over 7.5 million. The game was developed for Nintendo Switch. Pokemon Red, Green, and Blue still holds the first position with 10.23 million copies sold to people who are fond of playing these kinds of video games. With the simulation game gaining a lot of popularity, there is a considerable possibility that Animal Crossing: New Horizons might upstage the Pokemon game in Japan.

Animal Crossing: Animal Horizons Sales Crosses Pokemon Gold and Silver

Animal Crossing: Animal Horizons sales surpassed role-playing video game Pokemon Gold and Silver to achieve the second position. The game was released in 1999 and sold 7.150 million copies. It was developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo. The game was released for a single platform, i.e., Game Boy Color. The game belonged to the second generation Pokemon games, and like Pokemon Red, Yellow and Blue, Gold and Silver was played in the third person. One of the main goals of this game was to defeat the elite four and Pokemon master Lance to become the champion. The other objective was to catch, trade, and evolve Pokemon to have all 251 Pokemon.

The coronavirus pandemic has forced people to stay indoors, and this might trigger people to start playing games. A little over 2.5 million copies of New Horizons need to be sold in Japan to take the first position with a huge gap in sales of both the games.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons- A Life Simulation Video Game

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a life simulation video game developed and published by Nintendo. New Horizons is the fifth title in the Animal Crossing series and was released in the market on March 20, 2020. Animal Crossing game allows the player to choose and play a customizable character. The fictional character then goes to a deserted island after buying a package from Tom Nook, a game character who operates a store in the village. Nook is a tanuki (raccoon dog) who has featured in every game under the Animal Crossing series.

The game takes place in real-time, and the player with his/her character can gather and craft different items. The selected style can also catch fish and insects and go on to develop the deserted island into a home of anthropomorphic animals.

A Nonlinear Life Simulation Pattern

Just like the previous games in the popular series, New Horizons is played in a nonlinear life simulation pattern in real-time. The games allow the player to convert his/her procured materials in different furniture and tools. Nook miles is a fictional currency in the game which can be earned by the character after completing various tasks. With the money, the player will have the option to buy premium items. The players can also invite animals on the island and determine where they will be constructing their homes. One unique feature is that the weather in the game adjusts according to a player’s real-world location.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons supports only one island per Switch system. The 5th installment supports local and online game cooperative gameplay. It also allows up to eight players online to occupy the deserted island at any given point of time.
