An Overview of the Common Types of Adhesives and Glue
by Jessica Merrel WriterIt goes without saying that we have all used glue at some point, be it
for the purpose of art and craft projects or for fastening things. And of
course, we’ve all heard about adhesives. The term “adhesives” is used to
describe any substances which, you can use to hold, fasten, or bond things
together when you apply between the surfaces of two or more materials or
objects (i.e., substrates).
Believe it or not, there are many different types of adhesives and glue
and each one is designed with its own purpose. This article aims to throw light
upon the most common types of adhesives and glue and their uses, so that you
can find the right adhesive for your next project.
Here’s a lowdown on the most common types of adhesives and glue:
Construction
Adhesive- Adhesive suppliers supply
this for the purpose of bonding common materials found in construction,
renovations and home projects. This type of adhesive works with an array of
materials such as foam board, plywood and fiberglass. The adhesive is usually
available in cans or tubes, and generally dries within 24 hours.
Wood Glue- As the
name suggests, the glue tightly bonds pieces of wood together. The glue sets in about an hour but
can take up to a day. The three main types of wood glue include PVA (creates
strong wood-on-wood bond), Polyurethane (the glue can stick to wood, stone,
ceramic, plastic and metal), and Hide glue
(this type of wood glue is mainly used for the purpose of cabinetmaking
and on chairs). Its main properties include superior strength and resistant to
moisture and damp conditions.
Super Glue- The best
thing about super glue is that it bonds quickly, and works efficiently with a
variety of materials and surfaces. This glue is waterproof and fast-setting,
and is considered to be the best glue for household projects. As the glue dries
up very quickly, it can end in your fingers gluing together so, be careful
about it.
Epoxy- Epoxies
are used in a variety of repairs and home improvement projects (can hold up in
extreme conditions). Epoxies are available in two-part components, a resin and
a hardener. This type of glue can work on a variety of materials- wood, marble,
plastic, etc., and has superior strength.
Spray
Adhesive- For a quick repair (household fixes, craft projects), a spray adhesive
is the best option to resort to. This is another popular multi-purpose adhesive
that is ideal for use on a variety of surfaces- fabrics, paper or foam board, wood, metal, etc. The
bond tends to vary based on the material it is sprayed on. You must work in a
well-ventilated room while spraying adhesive to allow it to completely
evaporate before joining for immediate bond.
Craft Glue- This
multi-purpose glue, also known as white glue, is most commonly found in
schools, homes, and offices
that
helps to attach paper and other similar porous items like card sheets. It is a safe
glue to be used by both kids and adults, which can be attributed to the glue’s
zero to low toxicity. The glue takes up to an hour to set, and is ideal for
school projects and fun activities like making slime.
Fabric Glue- It is
difficult to hold together two pieces of fabric, this is where this specialized
variety of glue namely fabric glue comes into the picture. You can easily put
together pieces of cloth and textiles using this glue. Choose from the range of
fabric adhesives available as per your requirements. If you are stressed about
whether you should wash the garment or cloth item, you can very well do so
since these glues are usually waterproof.
Pressure
Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) - It is ideal to use this adhesive in art and
craft projects, for sticking pictures, etc.
Polyurethane- This is
multipurpose glue that bond a variety of surfaces, such as they bond to textile
fibers, metals, plastics, glass, sand, ceramics, rubber, and wood.
