What Freemasonry is?

Freemasonry has a rich history that started with the days when there were stone Masons who built the cathedrals in the era of King Solomon. At that time, guilds or associations were started which we call unions today, to barter for payments. The operative Masons used some signs and words for identification and guidance while traveling from one building to another. Later, these signs and words came to be known as the “Secrets of Freemasonry”.

Who can join Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is no longer a society of operative Masons but rather it symbolizes that members share an interest in the old craft. People from all creeds, religions, races and social status are free to join this fraternal organization.

Joining Freemasonry is becoming part of one of the most reputed and honored fraternal organizations across the world. An individual who has shown high caliber in emotional, religious and intellectual aspects is chosen to join this brotherhood. Freemasons are a group of men who follow a core set of values and lead a life with their unique ideologies and philosophy. The fundamental teachings include brotherly love, relief, and truth. Freemasonry is making a good man better and is all about leading life in a way to become a better version of you.

What is expected from a Freemason?

Members are not allowed to discuss politics and religion in the Lodge meetings. It is a personal choice of a member to join this fraternity and it is not a substitute for religion. The Masons are encouraged to perform the civic duties based on the laws of the country to which they belong. The virtues that are expected from a Freemason are hope, faith, prudence, charity, temperance, fortitude, and justice.

Freemasons wear Masonic regalia to show their affiliation towards the brotherhood. Different philosophies exist in Freemasonry including the Craft, the Knight Templar & Malta, the Holy Royal Arch Chapter, the Royal & Select Masters, the Holy Sepulchre and St. John the Evangelist, the Worshipful Society of Operatives and many more. All Masonic regalia have some of the most famous symbols embossed on them such as the Square, the Compass and the Level. Some of the Lodges also have their unique signs and symbols that are specific to them and are embossed on their Lodge regalia.

Degrees of Freemasonry

A member that is new to Freemasonry progresses through the three degrees that include: Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason. Each Lodge is governed by a Grand Lodge has its own laws and regulations.

Each of these degrees has the whole set of teachings, ceremonies, and wisdom that have been developed over the years. There are also other degrees besides the three above mentioned ones that expand the teachings of these three degrees. Most of the Freemasons do not go beyond the degree of a Master Mason but those who wish to attain other higher degrees can join Royal Arch, Cryptic Mason, and Christian Chivalry etc.
