What is expected from the members of Freemasonry?

by Collection Masonic Manufacturer

Freemasonry has a rich history that started with the days when there were Stone Masons who built the cathedrals in the era of King Solomon. At that time, guilds or associations were started which we call unions today to barter for payments. The operative Masons used some signs and words for identification and guidance while travelling from one building to another. Later, these signs and words came to be known as the “Secrets of Freemasonry”. This fraternal organization is the largest in the world and is administered by varying bodies. A lot of high standards are followed in building the membership of this organization, so there is a certain level of respect given to every member of this brotherhood.

What is expected from a Freemason?

Members are not allowed to discuss politics and religion in the Lodge meetings. It is a personal choice of a member to join this fraternity and it is not a substitute for religion. The Masons are encouraged to perform the civic duties based on the laws of the country to which they belong.

Freemasons wear Masonic regalia to show their affiliation towards the brotherhood. There are many different philosophies that exist in Freemasonry including the Craft, the Knight Templar & Malta, the Holy Royal Arch Chapter, the Royal & Select Masters, the Holy Sepulchre and St. John the Evangelist, the Worshipful Society of Operatives and many more. All Masonic regalia have some of the most famous symbols embarking on them such as the Square, the Compass and the Level. Some of the Lodges also have their unique signs and symbols that are specific to them and are embarked on their Lodge regalia.

Masonic regalia can be worn on daily basis as they are no longer just the flashy pieces that are limited to ceremonies and meetings. Some of these pieces are also custom-made for Lodges to offer more personalization. These regalia have different forms and some of these include like aprons, jewels, gloves, cufflinks, ties, badges, and much more. Based on the degree of the Mason’s ranking, each of them have a different level of importance. Some of these are awarded in Lodge meetings and ceremonies while achieving a degree and they stand as a medal of honor.

Significance of Masonic symbols

All the Freemasonry symbols follow a geometrical and architectural pattern. To understand the history and culture of this fraternity, one has to understand their symbols.

Some of the symbols and what they represent: ‘G’ represents Geometry and God - Grand Architect of this Universe or Grand Geometrician. Square and compasses represents the architect’s tools. They are also used in masonic rituals as emblems to teach symbolic lessons.   Masonic gloves represent “Works of the Hands”.
