One of the most widely and successfully implemented methods to mitigate such a traffic problem is the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). It is an umbrella term that comprises of traffic management solutions, emergency management, public transport management, etc.

Govt. of India has recently decided to frame policies to implement ITS in collaboration with a Geneva-based road federation corporation. The standards laid down would take care of a lot of problems that plague the public transportation services.

Under the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), Automotive Industry Standard along with Automotive Research Association of India has formed certain AIS Guidelines & AIS 140 is one among them.

AIS stand for Automotive Industry Standard. AIS 140 is a set of standards published by Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) designed to generate an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) particularly tailored to gain complete control over public transportation system in India.

To meet with the AIS 140 guidelines each and every commercial vehicle (with yellow number plate) will need to have a real-time GPS tracking system with the camera surveillance system and emergency alert buttons (panic/SOS buzzer). This mandate is in line with the notification from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) dated 28th November 2016.

The government of India has directed all the state governments transport to apply and follow the standards, equip AIS 140 compliant GPS tracking devices with supporting software application for all passenger-carrying buses, and other public transport vehicles from 1 April 2018.

To begin with in order to comply with AIS 140 guidelines, every bus will need to have a GPS tracking system, an emergency button & camera surveillance. The government believed that ITS would reduce all traffic-related problems and help Regional Traffic Office (RTO) in tracking and searching a vehicle in case of an emergency like theft, accident etc. Passengers can also inform the control room in case of a mishap or other emergency.

Both the existing vehicles and the future ones will be required to be fitted with GPS and emergency button. This means that the automotive OEMs along with aftermarket organizations and Tier 1 suppliers need to have these systems ready.

The Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) initiative would force following public and commercial sectors to adopt the standard immediately.

  • Ambulances & Emergency Response Vehicles
  • All of the Educational Institutions
