Advantages of Undermount Sinks

by Tyler P. A Passionate Blogger - Entertainment
As simple as the name sounds, an undermount sink is fitted beneath the countertop. Due to such a fitting, such a sink is unique due to its discrete appearance. Some of its advantages are as follows:

  • 1) Undermount sinks are available in several materials and sizes, just like the top mounted sinks
  • 2) Being discrete, they impart style to any type of kitchen
  • 3) As the sink’s edge is present below the countertop, it is able to create a constant flow from the countertop to itself
  • 4) Since no exposed rims to capture crumbs and dirt exist, food scraps go straight into the sink, not allowing impurities to accumulate on the countertop
  • 5) An undermount sink is perfect if you wish to create a minimalistic look in your kitchen
  • 6) It lends the kitchen a creative touch
  • 7) Tremendous counter space is created when this sink is present

Install properly
The best undermount sinks are always installed and sealed properly such that there is no leakage. At the same time, these sinks also need to be given proper support. Understand that when all dishes are present inside, the sinks become very heavy. Unless you want them to fall down, proper support is absolutely essential.

Undermount sinks are usually installed with a two part epoxy adhesive and with silicone in its perimeter. Do not contemplate installing the sink yourself; it is a safer idea to get it installed by a professional. In most cases, professionals will be able to install these sinks in 30 minutes or less.

Types of sink support
When you shop for undermount kitchen sink, keep in mind that building an appropriate support for the sink is just as important as installing the sink itself. Concrete countertops must never take the entire weight of the sink, or else it may crack. For support, a plywood structure with the cabinet frame needs to be constructed. The following types of support are installed to support this frame:

  • 1) Customized wood frames- This custom-made wooden frame will be mounted to the walls of your sink cabinet. It is capable of handling the weight of the sink using flanges. Do ensure that a little bit of room is left between the bowl and the cradle.
  • 2) Commercial bracket- This commercial bracket can be installed by a company which provides granite supplies. The brackets have to be installed on the frame as per the manual.
  • 3) Customized plywood shelf- the sheet of this plywood has to be thick as per industry standards. A hole is made in the plywood through which the sink will be put. This hole needs to have adequate space for aligning the sink as well.

Some people may think that undermount sinks are really expensive. However, if one takes into account their durability and various advantages, the benefits far outweigh their costs. Also remember that at the end of the day, such a sink will definitely add to the resale value of your home. So, if long term advantages are what you look for, an undermount sink is a great investment.
