A Detailed Overview of the Different Types of Packing Machines

by Sunil D. Managing Director
A key component of success in the quick-paced manufacturing and logistics industries is adequate packaging, from a conventional flow wrapping machine to the modern-day automatic pouch packing machine. To achieve this efficiency, packing machines are becoming a necessity. In this thorough review, we go into the vast world of packing machines, looking at the different types that serve a variety of sectors and packaging requirements.

Types of Packing Machines

There are numerous types of packing machines available in India or overseas. However, we will discuss  only three in this comprehensive synopsis of packing machine types. Flow Wrapping Machines, Automatic Pouch Packing Machines, and VFFS machines
Now that we know what types of packing machines this article will talk about let's discuss each one in detail:

A. Flow Wrapping Machine

Flow wrapping is one of the most popular packaging techniques, particularly for biscuits, chocolate bars, tissues, tea bags, etc. This packing method is a cheap, practical approach that can manage large product volumes. Flow wrapping is one of the most outstanding packaging options for anything that can be moved through a conveyor belt.

Flow wrapping is considered a hygienic packing choice since the goods are adequately secured from external contaminants such as dust, moisture, or UV rays. Things that are flow-wrapped are handled without direct contact.

A flow wrapping machine pushes a solid product along a conveyor belt. The packing material forms a tube to collect the product as it arrives at the conveyor and has a lengthwise seal on its bottom. The product is placed into the film "bag" and sealed at both ends.

Examples of Flow Wrapping Machine Usage

Various packaging techniques best serve different applications. Here are the use cases for a flow wrapping machine:

  • For primary packaging, flow wrapping is the material of choice for pharmaceuticals, bakery goods, candy bars, chocolates, biscuits, and soaps.

  • Cardboard boxes and cartons used as primary packing can be overwrapped with film. Flow wrapping is commonly used in a box holding goods like tea, cigarettes, cosmetics, etc.

B. Automatic Pouch Packing Machine

Due to the end product's simplicity, usability, and improved aesthetics, automatic pouch packing machines are growing in popularity.

At speeds of up to 200 bags per minute, automatic pouch packaging machines grasp a premade pouch, fill it with product, and seal it. This procedure entails rotating the bag intermittently between various stations arranged in a circular pattern. Every station completes a distinct packaging operation. There are often 6 to 10 stations, with 8 being the most common arrangement. Additionally, one, two, or four lanes might be included in the design of automatic pouch-filling and sealing machines.

Benefits of an Automatic Pouch Packaging Machine

Automation is always more beneficial than manual work. When employed for a large production, an automatic pouch packaging machine has a lot of advantages, such as:

1. Reduce labor Costs

Manual labor can be significantly costly when the price increases daily. Additionally, people can make mistakes. Waste, spills, inaccurate results, and inconsistent repeatability can all be avoided with the correct packaging equipment. Additionally, you can reassign your personnel to jobs that add more value.

2. Meet Escalating Demand

Your offering is expanding. There is a greater need, and you might even wish to explore other markets and regions. Your outdated packaging machinery just cannot keep up. Automated packaging solutions will enable you to follow through on your ambitious growth plans and respond promptly to increased demand.

Use Cases of an Automatic Pouch Packaging Machine

Automatic pouch packing machines are adaptable and can handle many items, including solids, liquids, powders, and everything in between. Such automated equipment is used for projects like:

Packaging fresh coffee for a coffee roaster into stand-up pouches.

  • Packing ground products such as ground spices, milk powder, premixes, etc.
  • Filling and sealing prepackaged cannabis gummy sachets for a prominent Canadian manufacturer
  • Bulk pre-workout powder packaging
  • Shredded cheese is put into bags and sealed with a nitrogen gas flush to keep it fresh.
  • Packaging upscale dog treats and food
  • Dishwasher pod pouches are being filled and sealed at a contract packaging factory.

C. VFFS Machines

VFFS stands for Vertical form, fill, and seal machines. The VFFS machine is a packaging device that forms film into tubes that are continually fed from film rolls to create bags (similar to pillows), then feeds the film tubes vertically while concurrently filling the product. Materials are added, the top of the bag is sealed and cut, and then the finished bag is removed from the machine and moved on to the next phase once the bottom of the film tube has been shut. The bag width and length on a VFFS machine can be adjusted based on the quantity or shape of the product. There are many different types of bags, including those with a basic pillow shape, gussets, square bottoms, zippers, and three-sided seals.

The Use Cases of VFFS Machine

If you need to package a specific quantity of goods in bags, a VFFS machine is ideal. For instance, while utilizing a VFFS machine, you might produce solid, powdered, or granular goods.

Deformable or delicate products are not ideal for VFFS machines because of the structure that wraps the product by dropping the object into the bag.

  • Sweets and Nibbles: snacks, chocolate, baked goods, candy, marshmallows, cookies, nuts, rusks, and other sweets.
  • Powdered Products: A VFFS machine is used to pack products made of powder, including soup powder, spices, breadcrumbs, seasonings, cocoa, milk powder, coffee powder, and others.
  • Apart from these, VFFS machines are also commonly used in packing frozen goods like meat or ready-to-cook products, vegetables, processed food, insect repellents, etc.
