A Detailed Guideline To Radiant Floor Heating Maintenance

by Robert Morgan airzonehvac

Radiant Floor Heating in Ottawa is an excellent solution for home-owners to keep their homes warm and comfortable. It is also a smart option for maximising efficiency and reducing expenses rather than investing in additional devices.

Therefore, it's important to maintain your radiant floor heating system once it's been installed.

Here is a detailed guide to Your Radiant Floor Heating Maintenance:

You probably know that you need to clean and tune-up your furnace and air conditioning systems. But you might not know that your radiant floor heat system has to be checked and maintained regularly.

Why? Because it doesn't have ducts to clean or filters to change. But how can you tell that it needs maintenance?

1 - The first and the most obvious sign is that the heater is not working. You don't feel the warmth on your floor or in your room.

If your system is extended across multiple rooms, examine each of your rooms. Check if the problem is widespread or isolated to a certain part of the heater. In any case, you should turn off the system and call a technician as soon as possible.

2 - Another sign is to look for damage to the flooring. In some systems, you may be able to see leaks or fractures in the flooring. Again, turning off the heating and calling a professional is the best course of action.

A complete examination and pressure test

Call in a radiant floor heat expert to conduct a thorough inspection of your system. The inspection is done with yearly boilers and other equipment servicing.

The technician will inspect your system's pressure. Even though radiant heating is a closed system, it must keep consistent pressure.

For instance, sometimes, a low pressure indicates a leak in the pipe. Situations like this can be problematic for several reasons:

1 - Low pressure means the system isn't performing as effectively as it should. In addition, it also indicates the reduced efficiency of the system. These factors result in increased energy consumption and higher utility bills.

2 - Leaks are often easily fixed if the pipes are made of copper. But If the pipes are made of steel, they may need to be replaced entirely.

3 - A water-based radiant floor heat system can also lead to damages. For instance, leaking pipes can cause corrosion and rust.

Pumps and valves must be checked.

The pump is another crucial part of a radiant floor heating system that needs to be examined. It usually runs so quietly that you don't even notice it's there. But it might pose an issue if it becomes increasingly loud.

Your HVAC technician will check the pressure valve for wear and tear. The technician will also further clean the pump.

In a nutshell

A radiant floor heating system may last for decades if properly maintained. Therefore, it is in your best interests to ensure that your heated flooring system is properly maintained.
