6 Things to Know About Amazon’s Luna Cloud Gaming Service

Amazon recently unveiled Luna, a cloud gaming service that will compete against Alphabet’s Google Stadia, Microsoft’s Project xCloud, and NVIDIA’s GeForce Now in the next-generation market. Here are six things that the investors should know about Amazon’s Luna cloud gaming service.

Channel-based subscriptions

Amazon has recently unveiled Luna, which is a cloud gaming service that features separate “channels” for games. Each channel is going to offer unlimited access to a set library of games. The monthly subscription charges for each channel will be separate. It is presumed that this approach will allow publishers to maintain control of their games. Only two channels have been introduced by Amazon so far: the Luna Plus channel and the Ubisoft channel. Both of the channels are going to launch with approximately 50 games.

How Luna stacks up against the competition

During the introductory period, the cost of Luna Plus is USD 5.99 per month. In the Luna Plus channel, the games will be streamed at the resolution of 1080p and the frame rate of 60fps. The games can be streamed on up to two devices simultaneously. On the other hand, the price of Ubisoft’s channel has not been confirmed yet, but it will allow games to be streamed at the same resolutions and frame rates on a single device. According to Amazon, 4K streaming is “coming soon” for both channels.

By comparison, Google’s Stadia Basic tier allows the players to stream games they have already purchased at 1080p, for free. Google’s Stadia Pro tier allows the games to be streamed at 4K resolution for USD 9.99 per month and occasionally offers free games as well.

Microsoft’s xCloud will be bundled into its Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. It will include Xbox Live and the Game Pass unlimited download platform for USD 14.99 per month. Both xCloud and the Game Pass allow unlimited access to more than 100 games.

A cross-platform experience

Amazon’s Luna will run on PC, Mac, Fire TV devices, iOS devices, and Android devices. If we talk about iOS, there is a Progressive Web Application that runs through the web browser instead of the App Store. It bypasses Apple’s 30% cut of app revenues, and recently it has also imposed restrictions on xCloud, Stadia, and other cloud-based platforms.

It’s powered by NVIDIA’s hardware

Amazon’s Luna is going to be powered by Amazon Web Services and NVIDIA’s GPUs. However, Stadia and xCloud both use AMD’s GPUs instead of NVIDIA. Luna is expected to gain momentum, and then it could strengthen NVIDIA’s data center business, which was responsible for generating 45% of its revenue recently.

Luna will be integrated with Twitch and Alexa

Amazon is planning to integrate Luna with Twitch’s streaming platform very soon. It is quite similar to that of Google’s recent integration of Stadia into YouTube Gaming. It will help Twitch’s lead in the game streaming market.

Amazon’s Luna will also be integrated with its Alexa. It will accept voice commands through the optional Luna controller. This integration will work with Amazon’s Echo devices and other Alexa-enabled devices.

It’s an ecosystem play, not a revenue one

Currently, Amazon is accepting only “early access” applications for Luna’s limited launch that is going to take place this month. But when Amazon officially launches Luna, there is a possibility that it would not generate enough revenue to reduce the company’s dependence on its core-e-commerce and cloud businesses. Instead, Amazon will likely expand Luna to widen its strength against its ecosystem rivals such as Google, Microsoft, Facebook, etc.
