5 Things About Apsley That Not Everyone Knows

1.      The name ‘Apsley’ is Anglo-Saxon in origin and means aspen wood.

2.      The village is strongly associated with John Dickinson, who invented a continuous mechanised papermaking process that would play an instrumental role in the development of Apsley. Purchasing an existing mill in the area in the first years of the 19^th century, he oversaw a business that went on to become one of the world’s largest stationery manufacturers, with the final John Dickinson paper mills not closing until 1999.

3.      There is a similarly strong link between Apsley and the Longman family – best known today for the publishing company that was founded in 1724 and is still going strong in 2018. The MP George Longman was a source of vital financial support for Dickinson, and later – in 1853 – Shendish Manor came into the ownership of Charles Longman. The property remained in the possession of the Longman family until the 1930s, when it was sold to John Dickinson Stationery and subsequently used as a sports and social club.

4.      Shendish Manor finally assumed its present identity as a hotel and conference centre in the 1990s. It has also developed a strong reputation as one of the premier Wedding Venues in Apsley, with one of the property’s wedding suites having even been named after the village. Couples who book the Apsley Suite for their reception can look forward to elegant decor, sparkling chandeliers and sufficient space for as many as 320 guests.

5.      Shendish Manor dates as far back as the 13^thcentury, when Ralf de Chenduit was granted land in the area where our resplendent Victorian manor house now stands.
